Road Crew Ride Classifications

All rides are listed according to guidelines that include pace, distance, terrain, etc. Note that helmets and membership cards (proof of insurance) are required on all JH Road Crew – Pedals & Pints rides.

Please choose from the following classifications for a ride that suits your skills and energy level.

Pace - refers to the range of speeds on level ground without breaks; downhill may be faster, uphill slower.

Easy Riders: 15-24 kph (flat bars welcome)

Intermediate: 24-32 kph

Advanced: 30+ kph

Note: for rides described as HILLY, consider choosing a pace one step down from your usual comfort level

Road Crew Terrain

These descriptions should be considered in the context of the pace and length of the ride.

  • Mostly flat: trails and/or mostly flat roads with a possible gentle upgrade.
  • Rolling: climbs are short and easy, not too numerous.
  • Some hills: a few short, steep hills, some moderate upgrades and/or longer gentle climbs.
  • Hilly: many true hills but none outrageous.
  • Extremely hilly: steep and long climbs with grades >9% and/or mountain passes.
  • Unlimited: "out of category"; only for those very sure of their ability to climb any grade, any length at the advertised pace.

The Basics

Group training rides are a must if you feel like having some fun and getting some miles on the bike. The John Henry Group rides go all year and right now are mostly road based for training purposes.

The rides are not elitist in any way and are generally split into rider ability levels so each rider can enjoy their own ride. Spring rides tend to be of the obvious LSD (long, slow distance) variety and as we push towards warmer weather the rides increase in number and the more "fair-weather" start showing up. For these rides make sure a road style bicycle is what you are using. If you are using slicks on a mountain bike you will need to ride with the Easy Riders group so that the groups can maintain some continuity.

Mountain Crew

Our group mountain bike rides are beginning again, stay tuned to the site for the posted schedule! To participate in the group rides we require that you get your mountain crew membership completed prior to any riding. This will insure you in case of injury and you need to take time off of work.

Alien Adventures Youth Mountain Bike Club

The Return of the Aliens: Landing on Mountain Tops Near You Well another summer is just around the corner and with that is the return of the John Henry Bikes youth mountain biking club, Alien Adventures. this is a group of dedicated John Henry employees, past and present, and parents that just want to give back to young people. the club is for mountain bikers who don't always have someone to ride with and need some comrades. If you can ride reasonably well and are between the ages of 10 and 18yrs old come and join in the fun, support fellow riders, learn more because you are riding with others, add to the spirit and overall experience of other mountain bikers and harness your inner Alien! 2009 is on.

Here are the details as of April 14, 2009:

    Rules etc.
Alien Adventures is a fully supported club ride with specific leaders for each group that have first aid in case of problems. Your children will be safe with us. Some Rules Alien's Live By:
    • 2 leaders per group (front and back)
    • must stick to schedule (so that we know where everyone is)
    • must act and dress appropriately
    • believe that mountain biking is a great way to learn and grow
    Events Alien's Support:
    • John Henry Days: duties include handing out information to other young people that may want to join your group
      • Run the hot dog stand to raise money for future Alien trips and Alien charities [all food provided by John Henry bikes to support young people riding...but you have to earn your turns so you have to cook 'em and book 'em.]
    • John Henry supported NSMBA trail days: get out and weild that mighty alien power to help re-build the trails you ride.
The environment at Alien Adventures Youth club is one of learning and growing through physical exercise, community involvement, team support and love for the sport of mountain biking. Trail building and earning funds for trips is a way that all youth can better understand the world and learn many different things beyond just th experience of cycling.

Some Cool Things That Alien's Receive:
    • On occasion the odd pro rider will show up to help lead a group and talk about their mountain biking experience. past pros to show up to some John Henry group rides are people like Ryan Leech, Jay Hoots, Hans Rey, Wade Simmons and many more. Look for the pros to roll out on the Aliens.
    • The coolest alien 3/4 sleeve t-shirt sporting the team look. Wear it to the rides or sport it out and about.....but you only get one if you are part of the team.
    • A shop discount of 10% off parts and accessories and a deal on bikes if you are inn need of one [TBD based on choice of bike. See management.]
    • And much more is added as the season rolls on.....
Things You May Need to Help With
    • Each member gets a list of information for their parents which include the responsibilities of everyone regarding the club. this is not baby sitting. You will have to drop off and pick up your child at the meeting spots and you must make sure that they are properly accounted for with their nutrition, water and medication. This year we cannot have anyone bringing peanut based food on club rides. Occasionally we also ask that you assist with helping leaders retrieve their vehicles so that they can use their cars to help your kids.
    • Major Note: all the leaders are volunteers and they welcome you and your family members to help out. Abide by what they say and don't be a brutal hockey parent!!!!
    Suggestions:
    • there will be no beginner group and children should have some experience trail riding
    • if you don't think your child is up for it get them registered in an ESC Mountain bike course so they can then join up with the club.
