Upcoming Events

The Seattle to Vancouver Bicycle Classic is right around the corner, happening on the weekend of July 14 and 15. The event is sold out but if you're desperate to get in on the ride make sure you watch the Cascade Classifieds for anyone selling their registration at the last minute. Many people from the Pedals & Pints club are participating and heading down to Seattle on the Friday. If you need a ride or are willing to give others a ride, post on the JH Road Crew Google group.

If you're interested in road racing, Team Escape Velocity is running a time trial race on August 26. The Warp Speed Team Time Trial is open to men and women of all race categories (1 through 5) and is for teams of four riders. The start line is on N. Parallel Road just north of Atkinson Road, Abbotsford, BC. Route is an out and back course completed three times (depending upon category). This will be a great race to put your peloton riding skills to the test. Skills which you can totally practice on our Pedals & Pints road club rides.

Places To ride

Sun Peaks, BC - June 29, 2007 - Opening weekend was great! The rain held off and the trails were nice and tacky. Due to the slower melt on this year's snow pack, the Bike Park Trail Crew only had three weeks to get the park prepared for opening.

The Bike Park Trail Crew has done some really sweet work thus far including a nice face lift to the Biker Cross, a huge buff job on Honey Drop, a complete over haul on the trail formerly known as 'Bambi', now known as 'Behind Bars' with some new log rides, stump hits, and wooden features to test your free riding skills. The most noticeable work is the upgrades and re-shape to Steam Shovel. The top section of the trail now has a couple new wooden drop options, and some of the tighter corners have now been opened up to some really nice high speed table tops. Another new addition of single track called Creeper has been added to this trail to help avoid the dangerously high speed shale face on the Ridge ski run. This new section of trail is an interesting mix of slow and technical lines to the faster speeds of Steam Shovel.

The Trail Crew has now shifted their efforts to finishing the Rock Mountain Flow Zone skills centre in time for the grand opening on July 7th. The Rocky Mountain Flow Zone is located directly above the Biker Cross, and will feature a collection of progressive stunts and table tops. Over 150 loads of dirt have been delivered to the site, and the machines have been moving and shaping the material seven days a week for the past two weeks.

Whether you're new to mountain biking and wanting to learn the skills to pay the bills, or looking to learn the best lines through our Bike Park, we've got your back. Check out the available clinics and tours here. You can save $50 off a seasons pass if you pick it up with a BroCard (available from Bicycle Cafe in Kamloops and from Time 2 Ride at Sun Peaks). Check out other BroCard discounts here.

Whister Blackcomb Mountain Bike Park Air Dome opens Friday July 6. The Air Dome is a 10,000 square foot covered indoor mountain bike training facility with a huge foam pit, ramps, and a quarter pipe and half pipe. The Air Dome is now open for 3-hour sessions; participants will be fully supervised at all times. The Air Dome is located in Lot 8 on Blackcomb Mountain. For information on times and prices see here.

John Henry Bikes Presents the NSMBA Team Pangor Trail Day

Duncan from John Henry Bikes

Another successful John Henry Bikes trail day happened smoothly this weekend up on Mt. Seymour. Despite a busy summer schedule - Whistler Bike Park, Bear Mt. DH race and others claimed a number of regular trailday attendees - there were 60 eager volunteers ready to start the work of buffing Team Pangor into neat shape again.

This trail day was sponsored by John Henry Bikes, and all participants got a packed lunch to carry onto the trail. At this time of year, and with the weather as dry as it is, forest fires are no idle worry. Big thanks go to Powerbar who provided energy bars as part of the packed lunches.

The upper section of the trail was the focus for most of the work, with some pieces of wood work needing complete rebuilds. Notably the split line where in the past you could choose either an easy down ramp on the left of a large tree, and the alternate line which has always been a huck to flat on the right of the tree. The huck on the right now has a smoother run in, a new up ramp and a beautiful new milled piece of cedar to drop off. The landing has been converted into a buttery smooth transition from a previously choppy one. Right at the very top is where you will encounter the trail work first, with a beautiful rebuilding job on an old beaten up berm. Now we have a sweet berm, which should last some time, that spits you into a newly rebuilt cedar ramp/drop.

Go and check it out, the weather is just great for riding. If you're not a member of the NSMBA - you should be, it costs nothing and helps to keep our trails open. Follow this link and then go riding.... www.nsmba.bc.ca

H2V: Push The Pace Press Coverage

H2V, the ride across Canada to raise money for juvenile diabetes, was just recently featured on CTV. You can watch the segment online here. Although we're making excellent progress, having raised $550,000 already, we still need your support. Please help us make juvenile diabetes history. Every little bit helps; you can donate online (securely) here.

There are also new trailers online, so be sure to check them out here.

Club Rides

The Pedals & Pints road crew has been riding regularly on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. Last Sunday was an excellent ride around UBC and then out to Iona Beach. The group stayed together and practiced riding in pack formation; reducing the amount of work each rider had to do to keep pace. The Wednesday night rides in Stanley Park have been going well with a pretty good turn out every ride. Next ride, July 11, the group will be heading to Taylor's Crossing for a pint afterwards.

Bicycle Review

Argon 18 Gallium

ARGON 18 GALLIUM

When I first heard of Argon a few years ago, I initially thought that they were a boutique triathlon specific bike company. The fact is that their owner and principal designer is a former road racer and quite an accomplished one at that. What did attract me to them were a couple of things: they are Canadian, their bikes were light and, that Former Tour de France podium finisher Steve Bauer likes his and uses them for his cycle tours. Good enough for the best Canadian EVER at the tour, good enough for a week-end warrior like me.

I was curious what Gallium was so I did a little research. Gallium as a periodic element is a bit of an unknown. It has various uses from electronics to the ability to melt itself into other metals. I thought that was pretty cool.

Boy was I surprised when that Gallium came to the shop.

My Extra Small frame came in one box with the parts in another. The first thing I did was the old pick up the frame test just to see how light it was. The claimed weight on the site was spot on (995grams!!). Man that makes for a light start to my build up. Initial look at the frame revealed some rather cool finishing touches that I would later realize weren't just for cosmetics. More on that later. The one thing that took some getting used to was the amount of advertising on the frame. By the time I built it up, it was hard to notice all the times the name Argon is on the frame.

Gallium's Headtube

For starters, the headtube has some nice shapes sculpted into the sides for what I suspect allows better airflow and to decrease the weight while adding some stiffness to that area. Argon supplies their own house brand fork which not only does an excellent job soaking up the bumps while still supplying a sufficient amount of stiffness to the front end. There is very little fork chatter when applying the front brakes firmly for emergency stops. Anytime I have had a sub 15 pound bike, they tend to be one of two things, really stinking stiff or sloppy like an overcooked wet noodle. The carbon layout at the bottom bracket provides for an impressive stiffness under hard sprints. Chainstays on my frame were short and allowed for only vertical compliance. Nice touch when you hit the occasional pothole.

Argon's Carbon Seatpost & Specialized Toupe saddle

I went with the ever popular Dura Ace groupo. It is always hard to find anything wrong with what the BIG S churns out. Wheels were Mavic Ksyrium ES wrapped with Michelin Pro Race 2 tires. Argon supplied their own in-house carbon seatpost which was quite light and had a very nice offset to it. I went for a Specialized Toupe carbon saddle with ti rails. By the way, if you are looking for a new saddle, I would highly recommend it. I have rode on for the last 2 years and have spent over 7000 kms on it. Man is it comfortable. Handlebar is the new FSA K-Force shallow drop carbon handlebar. Light and has a traditional drop. Great for small hands. Total bike with pedals weighs in just below 15lbs with bottle cages and computer. Now that's a light bike.

Fit is the most important thing when getting a new bike and even though I used to fit custom road bike for professional road racers and triathletes in the past, I wasn't sure that this bike would fit within my very specific fitting needs. This was the first time I had gone to a bike so small. What you need to take into consideration is the toptube length. Argon has a system called AFS. This essentially means that one should make sure that the horizontal measurement of the bicycle is factored into the overall fit of the bike. It is probably the most important measurement as it will affect all riding characteristics of the bike.

Climbing on this bike is a dream. No flex laterally for standing sessions and just enough vertical flex for some of the longer seated sessions up Seymour. Coming back down the mountain at over 80km/hr, the bike handles excellently and corners like it is on rails. I can easily lay the bike over on its side and just point it around a tight 180 degree turn with the knowledge that it will hold, stomp on the pedals out of the apex and know I can get it back up to speed quick enough to run out of gears and back into the tuck.

Argon has done an excellent job making a bike that will not only make the transition from full on race bike to Ironman Tribike to week-end warrior. Job well done.

This is one bike that's staying in the stable for quite a while.

Check out Argon's website for all their technical info. It is worth a read into all their reasons for the design of their bikes. Several models to choose from to fit the needs of all.

Argon 18 Helium Frame

ARGON 18 HELIUM

What a ride, sweet as can be! I've been riding this bike for the last month and am very impressed with what little time taken to get this bike dialled in to the way I like to ride. You can ride forever on this road bike, with a comfort level at 10/10 and to feel the power going into your riding being completely transferred to the pedals and to the road is super satisfying. This bike makes it easy to go!

The Argon 18 Helium, defines a balance between a performance bike and a comfortable ride. Riding the roads of the lower mainland, you will not even notice you aren't riding on freshly paved streets.

I chose the black raw carbon frame, and so thrilled with my super light, shiny frame! The unique design and fantastic colours make it easy to feel super confident when on the road.

Of the bikes I have ridden, it certainly ranks on top!

The Baia Brothers Trails Show at John Henry Days
The Baia Brothers Trails Show
at John Henry Days

Well it's finally the best (cycling) time of the year, Summer! We're finally getting to the point in the year when it pretty much doesn't rain and that means it's time to get back on the bike (or put away the rain gear for you year-round commuters). Now whether you've been riding your bike all winter long or its been in storage, there are probably some things you need to get in on the summer biking action. We're here to help get you back into the saddle.

We just had our largest annual sale, John Henry Days, for the 15th year in a row. The event was a huge success; and I mean event. This wasn't just a sale, we had the Baia Brothers showing off their awesome trials skills. Riding along wooden beams merely a couple inches wide, hitting a ramp and launching four feet into the air to land on a platform that's just wide enough for the bike, then balancing on one wheel before rolling down the ramp and jumping off. All without ever taking a foot off the bike. These guys have some serious skills and put on a really great show. ESC Bike Camps was there running a mini bike rodeo (a course of small ramps and narrow beams) teaching young kids bicycle handling skills that they can take with them to the mountain trails.

The kids from Alien Adventures put on a BBQ with the proceeds going to support their youth mountain bike club. Representatives from all of the manufacturers of bicycles we carry (Norco, Brodie, Specialized, Argon 18, Santa Cruz, and Haro) were there to answer questions and they had demo bikes with them so you could take different models for a test ride and find the right bike for you. All in all it was a really great weekend; you can check out our pictures here and our videos of the Baia Brothers show here. We still have some left-over products on sale, be sure to check them out in the specials section of the John Henry Bikes website. If you bought a bike at John Henry Days (or recently) make sure you bring it into the shop after you've put about ten hours riding on it so that we can make sure everything is still properly tightened and running smoothly - this service is free and included with the purchase of the bike.

If you missed John Henry Days there's still plenty we can do to help get you back in the saddle. Bring your bike in and get it tuned up, talk to our staff about the appropriate gear that will make your ride as comfortable as possible (shorts, shoes, gloves, and saddle are all crucial - especially on long rides) then sign up for our Pedals & Pints road club and come out and join us on our Wednesday and Sunday rides (last Sunday we had 35 riders). We never drop anyone and some of our more experienced riders will be more than happy to help you out with technique and bicycle fit tips as well as be awesome ride company! You only have to bike alone if you want to.

The new John Henry "Live To Ride" jerseys and shorts just arrived; come and get your kit so we'll all look like pro's when we ride!

The route takes you through the scenic valleys, forests, and farmlands of western Washington and Oregon. The STP is considered one of the 10 biggest recreational bicycle rides in the country, drawing riders from across the nation and from other nations. The ride is supported and has food/mechanic stations roughly every 25 miles (40km), a beer garden at the halfway point, and a festival at the finish line (with another beer garden). Come join what Bicycling Magazine has listed as one of the best cycling events in the nation!

Adventure Challenge

Riders from both Pedals & Pints and Innovative Fitness will be participating this year. So sign up online and then come into the shop or join us on a club ride to talk to us about your cycling gear and how we can help you get ready for STP. Get your bike tuned up while you're at it and start piling up those km's because on July 14 and 15 we're going to rock.

Also coming up later this year in September are two big events. The first being the Canuck Place Adventure Race; this exciting adventure race will feature trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, and a climbing wall. Participants can race solo or as a team of two or four and will receive an 8-week training protocol prepared by Innovative Fitness including weekly instructed trail running and mountain biking classes, one day clinic on kayaking adventure racing, and continuous support to help reach individual goals. In return, we ask you to raise a minimum of $1000 in pledges. 100% of the proceeds will go to support Canuck Place Children's Hospice. John Henry himself will be participating and this will be his first race, so make sure you say hi when he passes you ;)

The second event being the Halifax to Vancouver (H2V) Push the Pace ride also taking place in September. Five elite-level recreational riders, Willie Cromack (of John Henry Bikes), Matt Young, Richard Alm, Keith Nicoll, and Kyle Balagno will push hard to cross Canada in a record-setting nine days. Seven regional JDRF chapters will mobilize support with a massive grass roots initiative to take the ride to its ultimate goal: To raise $600,000 to fund research for a cure for Juvenile Diabetes (Type One). Great strides have been made in Type One research—but only a cure will eliminate daily insulin shots and the constant threat ofblindness, amputation and death in our children. In September 2007, H2V will launch from Halifax Harbour and ride the Trans-Canada Highway to Vancouver. This important event will connect with thousands of Canadians to share our urgent goal: to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes.

The Future

World's Greatest Speed Bump Jumper
World's Greatest Speed Bump Jumper

Remember when you used to finish school and then it was play all day in the sunshine; laughing and giggling and just doing nothing really at all. Doing nothing but giving it 100%...whether it was hop-scotch, tag, kickball or just riding your bike over the speed bumps as many times as you could. You didn't have to be good because there wasn't such a thing. Everyone was the best speed bump jumper. Girls had skirts on and boys had ripped knees in their pants but everyone had a bike and everyone used it to get places and see great things.

Freedom was on a bike. Going to get licorice or parading down to the local park, the bike was the first step towards your freedom and all you had to do was be home before dark.

Do your children have that same luxury? What kind of freedom have you shown them?

Each morning you think about what your workout will be or what you have to eat to stay healthy, which I might add is a great way to live, but what about your children. What about all children?

Will they see the great things you saw when you first had your bike? Are you riding like you did when you were little or is it just a chore because it's all about the fitness?

The point of this is that maybe it is time you took each other for a bike ride. You can teach them that bike riding when you were young was all about exploring and getting to cool places and they can remind you that riding today for you can still be about those very same experiences. Riding a bike hasn't changed, only your attitude towards it has.

Grab some kids and help get them out so they can see the world in a whole knew way.

I bet you can jump the speed bumps higher than the last time you tried.

Live to ride.

Starting Fresh!

Issue 68 - April 1, 2006 California Ford Half Ironman, March 18th, 2006 March brings with it cherry blossoms, chocolate bunnies in the stores, and the start of the racing season for triathletes. In New Zealand, violent winds two weeks ago forced the Ironman organizers to cancel the swim and slash the bike and run distances in half. The following weekend, our local triathletes braved cool temperatures at the UBC triathlon. March 18th marked the race date for the Commonwealth Triathlon event in Melbourne as well as the California Ford Half Ironman in Oceanside (25 miles north of San Diego). Ready, set, go! My season started, for the second year in a row, with the Half Ironman in California. There are some who poke fun at athletes who peak for this early season race, claiming that those who peak in March will be suffering by October. Yet who really knows how everyone's season will play out? The winners of the event, Luke Bell and Michellie Jones, are both likely to have the last laugh as they master multiple peaks throughout the year. They are simply far superior performers to the rest of the field, and can win races even at sub-peak fitness. I had three goals for this race. First, this event marked the beginning of my race season and would fire up my race muscles. Second, this event was intended to test my run fitness. Third, I was hoping to qualify for the 70.3 World Championship event, held for the first time in November in Clearwater, Florida. I accomplished two of my three goals. My eagerness to race is stronger than ever and my eagerness to train smartly has been reinforced. I qualified to the World Championships, as did my training partners, Paul Krochuk and Michael Simpson. I was unable, however, to test my run fitness, since my digestive system did not cooperate and I was forced to take a few breaks. The trip itself was exceptional. I traveled and bunked with Paul at the Days Inn Oceanside, which was a five-minute walk to the race start at Oceanside Harbour Pier. We both loved drinking coffee, eating well and watching Will & Grace repeats. Nothing beats Karen's (rich snobby co-star) humor to take the edge off an upcoming race. Brian, my coach, was very much a part of the race organization and was appointed the Run Race Director. He worked day and night, along with hundreds of others, setting up the course and attending to race details. This was a bonus and a burden. While he would constantly provide updates on race day changes or athlete gossip, he was far too busy to have much face time for race strategy discussion. Eighteen hours before the start of the race, we found a Starbucks to review the Plan. The Plan was as follows: Swim fast. Swim as fast as my arms and legs could churn and kick with one objective in mind—stay warm. The water temperature was all of 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It was so cold, in fact, that the organizers were offering age grouper athletes the option to swim only 700 meters instead of the full 2.0 kilometers. I had my best swim ever and exited with some of the top swimmers. Bike conservatively. Break the ride down into four quarters with a different focus on each. Cadence, Muscle Recruitment, Effort, Race. My goal was to conserve some energy for the run. The ride was grueling so I consciously conserved energy. In hindsight, I feel I could have given this ride more than I did but my focus was the run, so I kept my eye on the ball. Run to my potential. That meant running an effort I am trained to exert. It also meant staying mentally focused on keeping a fast, smooth foot cadence, hips forward and relaxed shoulders. It was all supposed to come down to my last 15 kilometers (the first five kilometers were dedicated to adjusting to the run and to setting the pace). Sadly, just as I was catching a few girls ahead, I had to make a detour to the seaside bushes of a residential road. Did these stops cost me in time and a compromised pace for fear of churning my insides? Likely. For this reason alone, I was sad not to have run to my potential. On the other hand, my competitive juices are fired up in great anticipation of the season ahead. Brian and I had agreed ahead of time that the only way I could upset my race was to ride too hard in the bike leg. What we failed to discuss was gastric distress, an all-too-common occurrence in triathlon and the number one cause for DNFs. Fortunately, I know what caused this distress and in the future I will definitely avoid the foods I ate to bring these symptoms on. Better to know the answer than to wonder why it happened! Having earned my spot at the World 70.3 Championships (see www.ironmanlive.com for more info) and with my racing season officially launched, my trip to California was a success. For those of you who raced in the UBC triathlon, I applaud you. If you plan to carry on racing this season or if you are kicking off your season in the next few weeks or months, I have a word of advice: avoid fiber for 48 hours leading up to a race and definitely avoid bran muffins the morning of a race! Christine Photo Contest This month, send us your riding photos to be eligible to win a free one year membership to Pedals and Pints or Alien Adventures. The municipal election of November 19th will decide whether or not we have a solid voice for our cycling community. We are the North Shore, we ARE cycling. Our community is where cycling starts, and everyone else around the world looks to us to see how it's done. People travel from the far reaches of the earth to see what we have, and experience what we've built. This election, vote for those who care about our recreation-oriented community, and who support our lifestyle. We can't tell you who to vote for, nor would we want to, but do your homework and decide who is best going to represent us and our cycling future. To give you a hand, the NSMBA has compiled a list of trail-friendly candidates. Remember, our future is decided here. # Richard WALTON - Mayor # Lisa MURI - Councillor # Janice HARRIS - Councillor # Roger BASSAM - Councillor # Robin HICKS - Councillor # Bruce CROWE - Councillor # Doug MCKAY-DUNN - Councillor Customer Appreciation Night No really, thank YOU! And if that's not enough, Jason is present in the shop most days, and he or any other staff member will be more than happy to assist with your decision. Read the article here. Electing a Mayor That Supports Our Riding Lifestyle

Issue 61 - October 15, 2005 North Vancouver District will be electing a new mayor on November 19th. It is our duty to get out and vote for the candidate that we feel is best suited for the job. A letter recently received from a good friend of ours, best describes our stance on the matter, and who supports our cycling community: "From my experience on working with Richard Walton (waltonformayor.ca) on the bike festival and conference, he's the best candidate for Mayor of the District, and represents mountain biking's best hope in minimizing the bureaucracy we'll have to deal with in future enjoyment of the trails. As treasurer for the festival and conference, Richard kept things in control resulting in over $50K profit that is making its way back to the trails and community through a legacy fund. So far $10K has been granted to the NSMBA for work on the Camp Brick re-route and bridge upgrades along the Bridal Path. Richards guidance has helped the NSMBA strengthen its relationship with the District and other North Shore landowners; a relationship that can only become more productive with him as Mayor... Please feel free to pass this onto your riding friends. Regards, Dave" Whatever you decide, get out and vote! 2005 Pedals and Pints Off-Season Rides You can still ride, even if it's dark! For those of you who haven't yet heard about the 30% surtax the goverment is proposing for imported bicycles, please click here to read about what's happening. For those of you who understand it and know how it will hurt us all, please voice your opinion and sign a petition in our shop that will be sent to our local MP. In a time where gas prices are high and environments are fragile, bicycle use should be encouraged. However, this surtax discourages bicycle use as it hits retailers and consumers looking for a mid to low priced bike. Let's do what we can to make sure this surtax doesn't happen. A Great Club for Those Who Love Tri!

Issue 59 - September 15, 2005 Exceleration Junior Triathlon Club JH is proud to support Vancouver-based Exceleration Junior Triathlon Club. Exceleration is a super way for youth to get out and learn to race while having a great time with peers of similar mind-set and interests. Providing programs for ages 4 and up, there's something available to all youth. The Exceleration philosophy promotes 'Respect, Challenge, Community, Personal Excellence, Fitness, Friends, and Fun'. With a philosophy like that, how could they be anything other than great? Exceleration incorporates three youth programs into one club; # Adventure Tri for ages 4-7 yrs # Kids of Steel (KOS) for ages 8-13 yrs # Youth Group for ages 13-19 yrs (both recreational and competitive options) This means that no matter what age group or ability level, the club has something to offer every rider. Exceleration takes members through all the forms of triathlon events. They also show them many other ways to train or just keep fit and have a good time; from swimming in the pool, to riding their bike, to running on the field or around the town. Members will also learn stretching and strengthening in the gym, goal-setting and reflecting, and incorporating movement skills and drills into all sorts of fun games. Every workout has professional coaching and caters to all ability levels. Enthusiasm is a must! For members who are competitive and actually want to race, Exceleration strives to challenge those members to reach their goals. These members are taught to race and learn technique, along with the mental skills required to push themselves farther during training and during events. All of this is done while helping to grow love of the sport and have fun with it. All in all, Exceleration Tri Club is a great place for young athletes or those who just want to have a good time and stay active. For more information, please visit ExcelerationTriClub.ca. Exceleration Tri - Weekend North Shore Program A Great Program For The Kids On Weekends Starting September 17th, Exceleration Tri club is offering weekend tri programs on the North Shore. These programs are for kids/youth 8 and up, both recreational and competitive. There will normally be two coaches at each event so there can be two main ability levels. So whether your kids are there for fun, fitness, or to win, they will have the right coach helping them out. Usually the younger KOS kids are split up from the older/faster youth at each practice. Saturday practices are at William Griffin Rec Centre. They will start with a trail run from 2:30-3:30, followed by a swim and dryland training, and log books from 3:30-5:00. Sunday practices will be in conjunction with Innovative Fitness. For more information, please visit ExcelerationTriClub.ca. September 17th / 18th Are The Last Days To Ride Cypress Bike Park Anyone who hasn't yet ridden Cypress Bike Park should do so now, as this weekend is the last weekend to ride a wicked park in our own back yard. Cypress mountain has done some incredible work in the bike park for this very first season of operation. Anyone who has been up there knows that Cypress is off to a great start, and has done some really impressive work for their very first season of operation. The time and effort that has clearly gone into all the trails up there is mind blowing, and we should all be super stoked that we have such a great bike park in our own back yard. The ideas that Cypress has in store for next season is definitely going to amaze us all, as we've been able to hear a little bit about what's coming for the park. Cypress is clearly very open minded to what riders want to see, and have been doing a lot of listening, which is great and means there will be a lot of really cool things happening up there in the next year or two. Be sure not to miss the very last weekend of riding this season at Cypress Bike Park, and make sure to give props to the crew up there that's been working all summer to give us what's currently available to ride. It's just a small sampling of what's to come, so next season is going to be off the hook. Visit the Cypress Mountain Website for all the details, and you can be sure to see the JH crew up there in full force this weekend. See you all up there. Trail Day - September 25th!! Support your NSMBA and your local trails Sunday, September 25th is the second to last trail day of the season, and there's no time like now to get out and fix up our trails. This summer was dry and our trails are looking rough, so now is a perfect time to get out and re-buff our mountain playground. Of course, NSMBA is our local mountain biking voice, and they organize these events throughout the year. We don't get to sponsor this trail day, but our crew always shows up and lends a hand. This particular trail day will be hosted by On Top and their generosity will probably get you some free lunch. Come out, dig some dirt, have some fun, and get some food. Not a bad deal. If you don't think this is the coolest thing ever, I will fight you! Sunday, October 16th, John Henry Bikes gets the honor of hosting a trail day on Corkscrew and we're looking very forward to it. We'll provide lunch, of course, and you can be sure we'll bring a party too. Trail days start at 9am and usually wrap up by 4pm. Let's hope the weather is good to us. It was a great shop before but now it is not so uncommon to see the staff go above and beyond for anyone in there. I took [a friend] in there yesterday and received great service from both Grant and Stephen. Grant was on the ball and took her right from the education through to the close. She ended up buying a Norco CRR road bike and is psyched already about spin classes for the winter. Your staff service made her decision easy and was the icing on the cake man. Thanks again Willie, Mike Christine had an excellent race and finished with an overall time of 9:58:13, less than 7 minutes behind the first place winner. Christine placed 8th at last year's Ironman, which is an accomplishment in itself. This year she has clearly pumped up the jam and brought herself to a very impressive podium finish. The Ironman, which takes place in Penticton, BC, is a gruelling race consisting of a 3.86km swim, followed by a 180.2km bike, and finished with a 42.2km run. It's a very demanding race and it takes a lot from any athlete to simply complete. We are very proud of Christine and her accomplishments. She is a very strong and talented racer, and we're proud to have her on our team. Be sure to read Christine's latest article, which appears in nearly every Seatpost Newsletter. You can also ask Christine anything triathlon related via her link on the right side of any page on the John Henry Bikes website. Congratulations Christine! A Seat Post Summer

Issue 57 - August 15, 2005 ESC / Extreme Sports Camps Teaching Kids New Riding Skills Since 1998 Extreme Sports Camps, or ESC as it's also known, is the biggest mountain bike camp for kids in BC. And there's a reason they've made it so big in such a short time. For seven years, ESC has been providing a fun and relaxed place to learn and hone riding skills on the North Shore. And although they have a primary focus on youth, they also provide programs for adults, ladies, and girls-only. ESC sees over 250 kids participating in their camps every year, and they are growing every season. They have the largest variety of specialized programs of any camp for ages 5-17. They cater to all ability levels, and will help assess what level each rider should start with. As a North Shore company that regularly uses the facilities available to us all, ESC also gives back to the community frequently. They donate numerous camps to family services, school auctions, and other community organizations. They also provide volunteering programs for high school youth, which is a great way for teens to get involved in the community and keep active with the sport they love. 2005 saw previous students become ESC instructors, as yet another way to involve youth in the camps and support of their community. The ESC crew has also created a Freeride Team which is open to more advanced riders. It provides weekend sessions and a summer camp that travels to various destinations to ride, such as Whistler, Fromme, and Woodlot. It's a great atmosphere and gives riders a chance to meet friends in a club-like setting. What sets ESC apart from others, is their dedication to personal achievement, rather than just running a camp. Their main goals include creating healthy lifestyles, encouraging respect for the environment and nature, and supporting personal growth and self-esteem. All of this comes ahead of just coaching and teaching, which puts them far above the competition. Focused on quality, accessability, and affordability, you can be sure that they've got a camp for your young adult that will push them to be their best, while not breaking the bank. And with some of the highest safety standards around, and ongoing training for all their instructors, you can feel safe with their skills and knowledge. John Henry's has supported ESC for years, and we continue to proudly stand beside them and support them in their endeavours. ESC is also partnered with the North Shore Winter Club, Brodie Bikes, Kal Tire, and the North Shore News. For more info on their camps, please visit their website at www.escbc.com. What Is Outdoor Adventure Recreation?

Issue 56 - August 1, 2005 Answers To Burning Questions I'm sure by now you've all heard the hype about Outdoor Adventure Recreation, or OAR for short. Everyone's talking about it, you see the posters, and you see the logo at all sorts of events. But the question for the rest of us remains; what exactly is OAR? Well the answer is simple. OAR creates recreation events for the masses. It isn't like other event co-ordinators, where us normal people feel like we can't compete with all the pros. After all, how could I comprehend even trying to race with the elite riders, when I've never done a race in my life? That's what most people say, and that's what OAR is for. OAR was designed to appeal to everyone, and provide all riders with an opportunity to race at their own level without pressure. If you're a pro, OAR has a race for you, and if you're a beginner, OAR has a race for you. You could say, 'there's something for everyone'. From single races to entire series, and from cycling, to running, to swimming, to kayaking; OAR has it all and more. Adventure races, triathlons, and centurian rides; they've got an event for you, and at your level. Aside from events, OAR also provides training clinics to help you prepare for events you may decide to tackle. They offer tech tips from expert level instructors, and weekly clinics to get you in shape and ready for the challenge. OAR exists to help you challenge yourself. Whether you have dreams of becoming a pro, or just completing a race, OAR cares about helping you reach your goals. Big or small, they will help you get where you want to be, without pressure, and at your own pace. Please check out the OAR website for all the info and to see what types of events are coming up in your city at OutdoorAdventureRecreation.com 'Hours in the Saddle' An Article by Christine Fletcher In our last newsletter, we announced the presence of Christine Fletcher on the John Henry team. Christine has been riding with us for some time, and now is on board through the internet side of things. Her feature 'Ask-A-Pro-Triathlete' is a great addition to the site, and allows everyone to ask a pro anything triathlon-related. This edition of the newsletter brings us a very inspiring article from Christine. You can read the whole thing by clicking here. Christine recently placed as top female racer in the Desert Half Iron in Osoyoos, British Columbia. Some of her other accomplishments include being the 2004 winner of the Victoria New Balance Half Iron, and she recently placed 8th in the Florida Half Ironman in May. Read all about her latest accomplishment here. Christine is a talented and powerful racer, and she brings a wealth of knowledge to our website viewers who have cycling-related questions that need answering. If you want to ask her anything, you can find her smiling face on the menu bar to the right of any page on our site. Be sure to read her excellent article this month. We're enjoying having Christine with us, and we're looking forward to the future with her assistance and expertise. Thanks Christine! At John Henry's, there is a lot of talk about Pedals and Pints riding clubs. That's because we love it...and also because we created it. Pedals and Pints is a ride club designed to provide cyclists with a fun / low-pressure environment to ride in. It gets you out every week, and gets you riding with really great people who are riding at the same level you are. Tuesday night is 'Ladies Only' night, and there are as many as 7 different groups that will leave that night. That means there is a group for every type of riding, from total beginner, to hardcore DH. At any level, the atmosphere is relaxed, so nobody has to feel that they are holding people up or going too fast. Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings are our road rides. These are a great way to get into road riding, or train for an OAR event. Rides are roughly 2 hours long, and push you to ride a little harder than you might normally. Great exercise. On Thursday nights, our co-ed rides leave. Again, there are multiple ability levels and riding styles that form their own groups. So you can ride XC, DH, all-mountain, whatever you want. There are also Saturday rides that vary in location and times. These are co-ed rides and they normally ride outside of the Shore. These are a good opportunity to see some of the other areas we have available to us for riding, such as Whistler and Maple Ridge. The schedule for every week is posted online with all the ride info. This means you can plan ahead and see what trails each group will ride, and how hard they will ride, allowing you to pick the group you want to ride with. After all the rides, members usually meet at Seymour's pub to chat about the day, and take advantage of the Pedals and Pints discount they receive there. Aside from the weekly group rides, members are also able to participate in skills camps that provide them with low-pressure instruction taught by the pros. These camps cost extra, but are only available to members. Pedals and Pints membership is $49, which covers you for insurance for all the rides in the year. For more information, please visit the Pedals and Pints Page of our website. A Silver Lining

Issue 55 - July 15, 2005 Sometimes It Isn't All That Bad Working in a shop, you never really realize how great it is to just get out and ride. It always seems to be a competition against yourself; you always make the push to step it up even further. You fall down, and you force yourself up to the top for one last beating before nightfall. Ironically, one of the best things that has happened to me to improve my love of riding, was the theft of my bike. As you can probably understand, I was royally choked the day I came home to an empty space, and a broken lock in the garage. Now being one of the younger employees in a bike shop, generally means that most of what I've got goes into my bike. And when I'm out a bike, I'm in trouble. After talking to the Police, and posting the bike's specs on NSMB.com, I was pretty peeved, and needed a quick fix while I could start saving for my next steed of metal and rubber. As it turned out, my dad had an entry-level hardtail that was collecting dust in the basement. As my only option at the time, I was excited to have some wheels under my feet. Well this wasn't the greatest bike in the world, but it got me around town. Soon enough, though, my need to ride the trails took over and I decided to grin and bear it. This bike was anything but my full suspension, but I managed. It wasn't long before I was dirt-jumping on it, and eventually I got the confidence to take this old bike down CBC. It was my first real ride in what seemed like years. The bike and I suffered, but I was so excited to be out riding. I was doing lines on skinnies that I had abandoned months earlier. The going was painful, and I was complaining the entire time. My arms hurt from the lack of good suspension, and I had to pick my lines very carefully so as to not get stuck. The shifting wasn't working well, so the drivetrain would skip when I rode skinnies, pitching me off into the bushes. I was trying hard to have a good time, but I was getting very discouraged, and getting angry with the bike and myself. About half way down the trail, abusing myself the whole way, I suddenly washed out and found myself thrown into the brush. Lying there for a moment, I thought about my predicament and started to laugh. Regardless of what I was riding, it had suddenly dawned on me how great it was to just be in the woods, on a bike. -by Spencer Willett Norco: A Proud Supporter of Our Biking Community Giving Back For More Than 40 Years Norco Performance Bikes has been around a long time; 41 years kinda-long. Needless to say, they've had the time to learn a thing or two about building the best bikes on the Shore. And I think pretty much everyone knows who they are and what they do. But while we all know Norco as a bike manufacturer and parts distributor, some of us may not know Norco as the huge community contributor that they are. While Norco has been building great bikes since 1964, they've also been helping the community in every way they can. The crew at Norco is a huge supporter of young local riders. Their grassroots sponsorship program, allows young hopefuls the opportunity to get some support from a big name, and often get their foot in the door to bigger and better things. Sponsorship levels depend on the relationship and what the rider can contribute, and Norco is always signing up new riders to ride loud and proud. This is an awesome program and a great way for talented riders to get noticed and get hooked up. If you take care of Norco, they take care of you. The Norco Team is also very generous when it comes to customer appreciation. Every year they manage to throw down huge, and take over a mountain for VPS Fest. This is an annual event held just for Norco customers, which provides them with a fun weekend of riding for next to nothing. This year, Norco took over Sun Peaks for a weekend and gave all Norco riders free admission to the park for the first day, and half price lift tickets the second day. Team riders, reps, and tech crews were there both days lending a hand, offering tech advice, and riding with all their customers. Everyone with a Norco was hooked up with the admission deal, and all others were certainly welcome to attend as well. There were prizes up to $5000 and free frames given away. And of course there was a live band to entertain the crowds. But Norco isn't just about supporting their loyal riders, they care about cycling too much to be that shallow. In 2005 alone, Norco will be present at roughly 70 cycling races and events, offering neutral support to all cyclists involved. That's right, whether you ride a Norco or not, they will be there to offer tech support and encouragement to everyone. From the smallest races, to the Canada Cup, and from coast to coast, Norco is there to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. Now that's a company that actually cares about cycling. Norco is also very in touch with riders when it comes to building their bikes. They are committed to local riding styles, and building bikes the way people want them. They build their bikes based on the feedback they get from the riding community, and from their team riders who push the limits of their bikes every day. The knowledge Norco gains from this goes right into the bikes they build, always striving to be on the cutting edge. From freeride, to XC, to BMX, and to road, you can be confident that Norco has the right bike for you, and the riding style you enjoy. It's difficult to touch on all the different ways that Norco continues to give back to the riding community. They are constantly finding new ways to contribute and support riders as much as they can. Whether you ride a Norco or not, they care about riding and about riders, and they will continue to give what they can to keep our riding community alive and well. Thanks Norco! Summer Is Upon Us, Time To Ride!

Issue 54 - July 1, 2005 And Time To Give Back To Ourselves It might not look like it lately, but summer is finally here. And with summer comes all sorts of fun things. Obviously, it's prime time for riding. The trails are dry and ready for us to scream down them. The weather will soon be perfect for after-ride BBQs, and down-time on the beach. So while the riding is prime, summer is also a good time for some other important things, like trail maintenance. The NSMBA has really stepped it up lately with trail days happening an average of twice a month. Trail days are a great way for us all to give back to our community, to our fellow riders, and to our mountain playground. Not only are they fun and make you feel good, but they're always loaded with tons of great incentives. When you attend 3 trail days, you automatically get a jersey, and you're entered into a draw to win a frame, armour, or a weekend at Sun Peaks. So keep yourself up to date with the NSMBA Website for all the dates of the Trail Days. Another great way to contribute to the trails, while having a great time, is the NSMBA Ripper Races. The Rippers are a ton of fun, and the money goes to support the NSMBA, which of course goes back to our trails and our mountain biking voice. The Rippers are held on our local trails, and have different formats for each race. They're always a good time, and help the NSMBA a lot. Again, keep yourself in the loop with their website, and get out and race for fun and support. So with summer here, and the good weather on the way, let's all make sure we find that happy balance between rippin' it up and keeping our trails buff. Have a wonderful summer. Willie Spins for Crohn's

Issue 53 - June, 2005 Congratulations to Willie Cromack: 24 hr spin for Crohn's Disease Will personally raised over $5400 First off, I know Will would like to thank everyone who donated to such a good cause. Will managed to make it through in his quest to spin for 24 hours straight, AND raise over $5000 for Crohn's Disease. Will set up his indoor spinner last Friday and spun right in the store, through the night and into Saturday afternoon. I think it is safe to say that Will's saddle must be broken in by now! I know Will was quite sore for a few days afterwards, but he can hold his head high with pride for such determined efforts. On behalf of anyone affected by Crohn's Disease, I would like to extend a thanks to Willie for such a valiant effort. June is Bike Month!! June is bike month and we cyclists should make sure we celebrate our collection of bikes and ride them as much as possible. Be seen on your bike as you ride to work, ride for some excercise, ride to the grocery store or just ride for fun. Here at John Henry's we are celebrating bike month by having all of the employees ride their bike to work (most employees do already). We also have volunteers working volunteer service stations at areas where commuter traffic is quite high, allowing those who are commuting to have the opportuntiy to have a quick service check on their way, adjust some gears or fix that flat. Jason Asma has been providing service on the North end of the Second Narrows bridge for anyone who is in need during the am and pm hours. There are events being held every day in Vancouver to celebrate cycling throughout the month of June. Here is a great resource to keep track of these events and opportunities: June is Bike Month. John Henry presents: NSMBA Trail Day: June 5th, Ned's Atomic Dustbin John Henry's is proud to announce that we will be hosting another Trail Day on June 5th on Mt Seymour. The last time JH held a trail day, we had almost 100 people turnout in quite wet weather, so let's see if we can bring out riders in numbers! Let's show our support for the NSMBA and see if we can get a record turnout for this day. After all, Ned's can really use it. Our first Trail day of the year got rave reviews from the amount of work accomplished on Ned's, which sees more traffic than any other trail on the shore for sure. Sunday June 5th at Ned's.... be there!! Meet at John Henry's at 8am on Sunday if you would like to help out, or need a ride out. OAR presents: Escape the Cove Adventure Race June 11th OAR, John Henry's, Deep Cove Kayaks and North Shore Athletics are proud to introduce the adventure event of the season! A day of adventure that the beginner, intermediate and elite can all enjoy within the same event. Beautiful Deep Cove in North Vancouver will be the central hub for this one of a kind Adventure Event. From the magnificent lower trails of Mt. Seymour, the picturesque mountain biking trails that take you to the top of the world, and the glass like water conditions known for great kayaking, Escape the Cove will be sure to serve up an experience quite unlike any thing you have done before. With a beginner, intermediate or advanced route to choose from you are able to define your own experience whether it is your first adventure race or you are a seasoned veteran. Only 15 minutes from the Second Narrows Bridge this is truly a remarkable day of adventure North Shore style! Which begs the question: "Where will you cross the line?" www.outdooradventurerecreation.com Crohn's and Colitis Heel and Wheel-a-Thon in Vancouver: June 12th On Sunday June 12th, Vancouver will be hosting the Annual Crohn's and Colitis Heel and Wheel-a-Thon to raise money to find a cure for this disease that is quite close to many of us. If you would like to learn more about this event, you can check out this website. Pedals and Pints One Day Skills Camp: June 25th Pedals and Pints will be hosting a One-Day Skills Camp on June 25th, lead by a team of instructors from Endless Biking. The camp is filling up fast and will be an excellent opportunity to brush up on the skills for the mountain bike season. There is a cap on the number of participants, so be sure to sign up quick if you plan on attending. The cost of the camp is $100 for Pedals and Pints members and will consist of over 3 hours of skill breakdown and progression drills, followed by lunch, and an afternoon full of riding. We will incorporate the afternoon rides to directly reflect the skills we'll work on, giving you the opportunity to practice these new-found skills in a 'real' environment. This is a tremendous way to build confidence and technique that will enhance your ride....guaranteed. This is a big day, and all of the participants usually leave absolutely exhausted and thrilled from their development. We generally like to wrap up our day at Seymour's Pub for food and refreshments, so be sure to bring a change of clothes for afterwards as well as some funds to feed your appetite. We do have a great arrangement with Seymour's that provides us with discounts and great service. Any questions regarding the Pedals and Pints skills camps can be directed to Darren at John Henry's or Endless Biking. happy trails, John Henry the Bicycle Man

John Henry's Trail Day for NSMBA We'd like to thank all of the volunteers who participated in the last NSMBA Trail Day on Seymour Mountain. Ned's Atomic Dustbin received a thurough buffing courtesy of over 60 volunteers who showed up to put in some much needed work on this highly popular trail. These days are imperative to the sustainablity of our trails and riding community. We rely heavily on volunteers and the efforts Gear review: 2005 RockShox Pike Note: The following product review has been assembled for your benefit. We want to be able to provide quality feedback on the products we carry, to help you make valuable decisions regarding your cycling needs. The following is what Darren Butler had to say about the new 2005 RockShox Pike. Fork Setup: Initially, I thought the motion-control and gate would be complicated due to a lack of understanding of how they worked. Once I took the time to read the manual and try a few different settings, I started to realize the potential of this fork. It is incredibly easy to set-up, incredible easy to adjust and it does not require ANY tools! The thru-axle is slick! The 'Maxle' or thru-axle was really easy to set up. At first, I didn't seem to do the axle up tight enough, but it seems to work fine now. Talk about straight-forward...you insert the axle, turn a few times to engage the threads on the other end, and close the lever/quick release. The travel-adjust is simple and straightforward, winding the fork up or down to your preferred travel amount. Fork Use: The fork has been great to use. I've been able to use the fork in a variety of terrains, weather conditions and I've also been able to put some reasonable mileage on the fork. The fork has performed well in all circumstances, whether the compression was totally unlocked/open or locked/closed, the gate seemed to work flawlessly and exactly how it was designed to. The travel adjustments worked seamlessly, as did the thru-axle. Taking off your front wheel in about 2 seconds flat is very handy and impressive. The fork worked well in all conditions and I was really impressed with the stiffness of the fork over drops and jumps, the plushness of the fork on the roots and railing through singletrack. I also really enjoyed the lightness of the fork when ridiing xc style trails. It handled everything flawlessly, from substantial drops (up to 8ft) and jumps, to nosing in on roll-downs that we shouldn't have tried to roll in on (the ones that make you go 'Whew!!!" and make your heart stop for a split second). Overall Impression: I absolutely love this fork! The performance of the fork combined with the adjustability and simplicity of it make it an instant favorite with me. The fact that a rider can change the entire set-up of the fork from one end of the range to the other, without any tools, is remarkable. The fact that you can do it all within seconds is brilliant. Whether I wanted under 4" or 6" of travel or to lock the fork out, it was all right there. I found the balance of weight to stiffness was perfect, as was the plushness to weight ratio. A lot of forks have gotten so heavy that they have lost their feel in recent years. Bottom line, this is one of the best forks I've used. It has all of the adjustment that I would ever need or want, and it does not require the use of any tools. How can you get any better than that? Check out the price!!! $624.99 is the retail price for this exact model, available in black and red. I will continue to ride any trails, jumps, drops with the confidence I need with the PIKE handling the suspension up front! happy trails, John Henry the Bicycle Man

Giving Back to Our Communities

Issue 49 - January 26th, 2005 Now, more than ever, a lot of us are finding ourselves in a position where we feel we should be giving something back. There are currently some crazy storms and weather systems that have all but crippled many parts of our nation and the whole planet. 'The Tsunami', as it will be known for years to come, brought the whole world to it's mercy. Political movements, alternative initiatives and even civil wars were brought to a halt as people gathered in a time of need to help those who were desparate for assistance. It seems that this natural disaster of biblical proportions has really opened many of our minds as to how lucky we are, how well protected we are, and of course how sheltered and oblivious we are. The geological phenomenon has triggered weather systems all over the world and created near havoc in many neighbourhoods, including ours. North Vancouver has been at Mother Nature's mercy over recent weeks as the entire Lower Mainland has been absolutely soaked in rain. Our friends to the East are being completely buried in snow too. These types of natural phenomenons cause all kinds of logistical nightmares for all of us, whether it is repairing or rebuilding a home, or rebuilding your community, or even rebuilding many of our local trails. Much of the world has really come forward in a time for need an donated great amounts of time, compassion and monetary support to rebuild. These contributions are essential to our existence and survival in this world. It is too bad it took such a tragic event to bring this back to the forefront of society. So what can we do here to help? Well, in every community there are countless organizations that can really use your help. Whether it is something you are involved in or not, 2005 will be the year to give something back. Why? Because we all need it. You may need to alter some plans to rebuild your neighbours house, you may need to ask for help in rebuilding your own house, you may even feel the need to volunteer for the Red Cross, The Cancer Foundation or even your local trail building association. Here in North Vancouver, many of our trails have been badly damaged because of monsoon-like conditions for several weeks causing slides and washouts all over the mountains. It is now the time that we all must come together and help rebuild the trails that we so often use and enjoy. We all depend on these trails for recreation and pleasure, and some even rely on these trails for business related ventures. It is absolutely crucial that we all pull together and do our part to rebuild, preserve and protect these trails for a sustainable future. So it is now that we ask each and every one of you to find some time to contibute to a local club, association, or even your neighbour in times of need. We all benefit from this kindness and generousity in the end, and we all are guilty of taking much more than we give. So let's make 2005 the year of giving back and make your community healthier, stronger and even more sustainable for the future! If you have any problems finding somewhere to contribute and would like to be involved in the mountain bike community, we can make the following recommendations: NSMBA (North Shore MOuntain Bike Association), John Henry's Pedals and Pints Riding Club, Alien Adventures at John Henry's, Cycling BC or IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association). Tsunami Relief We would like to thank all of those who contributed to Tsunami Relief at John Henry's. In just 2 short days of collecting donations, we raised almost $1500 to donate to the Red Cross which will be matched by the government making John Henry's donation worth almost $3000. All donations have since been directed directly to the Red Cross and we certainly encourage anyone to continue with the generosity. The mountain bike community has once again stepped right up to help out in time of need, and we'd like to thank all of you for the support. Gear review: 2005 Shimano LX Groupo Note: The following product review has been assembled for your benefit. We want to be able to provide quality feedback on the products we carry, to help you make valuable decisions regarding your cycling needs. The following is what Jason Asma had to say about the new 2005 Shimano LX groupo. "I have to say it's been a pleasure to get the chance to try out some of Shimano's new parts. I was given an LX parts kit to install on my bike. It included Hydraulic disc brakes, front and rear derailleurs, dual control shifter brake lever set, Hollowtech II crankset and bottom bracket, and a set of XT Disc wheels. Installation of the parts its easy with the exception of the dual control levers and the Hollowtech II cranks. The dual control levers, for those of you not in the know, are set up so that your brake lever also controls your shifting. You would be amazed at how nice this is. The shifting action is smooth and easy and its quick. I have yet to miss a shift or cause a miss shift by squeezing the brakes. The problem is that they are too long. They go so far into the center of your bar that unless you are running a very wide bar, you will find the brake hoses of each one almost collide with each other. This is a big problem for people with smaller bodies that need there bars cut down. As for the cranks, they are a bit of a pain to install only because you need some new tools to install them. Nothing major, but I thought you might want to know if you plan on getting a set and installing them yourself. I'll say this for the cranks though, man are they STIFF! I weigh in at 200lbs, and I can't get any flex from these things. No matter how steep a hill I climb or how hard I mash my pedals these cranks take it and stay firm. Try them and you'll never go back. They also weigh very little. If you compare these cranks with their bottom bracket to most high end light weight systems out there they are very competitive. Now I know its been said for a long time that Rapid Rise is stupid, useless, not necessary, a waste of time and many other things. I'll even admit to being one of those people who said most of that. I thought it was a dumb idea with no merit. I was wrong. There I said it. This is such a good way to go for shifting. It's quicker. You never miss a shift. It requires less effort to shift, and you put less wear on your drivetrain with it. I was so impressed that I am here to tell you I will never go back to a standard shift system. Try it and find out how great it really is. Trust me it's worth the investment. The brakes, too, were quite amazing. I was running Shimano 4 piston XT disc brakes before and now running these 2 piston LX brakes is great. They have almost the same stopping power, more adjustability, and a nicer profile. Only problem is they squeal. I was going nuts from the noise before I found a solution. It's a bit complicated to go into but ask me in store if you want to know. They still squeal in wet conditions sometimes but I can live with that. Most brakes do. But Shimano has got to find a permanent solution to that squeal problem. Its possible it was just my set that did it but I did try both resin and metallic pads and different rotors. It was still there. All in all I think The LX package is amazing. You get a lot of bang for your buck and it performs as well as XT in almost all aspects. I would say for the cost savings its definitely worth your time to take a look at it. Trust me you'll be amazed. And if you want to know more about any of the LX kit or any other technical issues don't hesitate to ask me in store." This article has been written by Jason Asma, a fine mechanic at John Henry's. Jason rides a Santa Cruz Blur and puts on hundreds of kilometres every week between his commuting and trail rides. Team

Issue 46 - October 5th, 2004 Regardless of your religious denomination or whether you believe in the 'Big Bang theory', the fact is the world was designed with co-existence in mind. A TEAM if you will. Yet from ecological, social, and financial perspectives using global, national, and provincial examples, it is clear the 'weakest world link' is the species claiming to be the most intelligent; Humans. Globally we are in crisis; over seventy percent of our team is at war with each other. Nationally, many sectors within our team have separated in search of 'independence'. Do they think they can win the title on their own? Provincially there are even larger pockets of team mates spending way too little time looking for solutions, and too much time, arguing & protesting. This simply over burdens the smallest percent of a small percent who are trying to figure it out. Let's explore what successful families, businesses, provinces, and countries need to do in order to field winning teams. # 1. Appoint or elect great leaders. In most cases the leader of any team is elected by the majority vote based on a variety of appealing characteristics. The leader must be a trusted advisor to the entire team while making decisions that benefit the entire squad or organization. The leader must design plays which utilise the strengths of the individuals and maximize the team's functioning. Without great leadership, the team is doomed. Sir Winston Churchill was a great leader. So too are Joseph Brunyeel and Lance Armstrong. # 2. Create visions. The leader of the team tables a vision based on experience and knowledge or the entire team decides on the vision based on the majorities needs. It is imperative that the vision agreed upon by the majority is accepted in short order by the minority. If they don't like the direction of the majority, find another team to play on. Does Lance Armstrong's U.S. Postal team aim to win individual awards or do they have a singular vision they focus on? Six titles later. # 3. Formulate plans. The vision coming to fruition requires a detailed plan of action. It is imperative that all members be actively involved in creating or contributing to the plan. The further in advance the plan can be formulated and shared with the rest of the players, the greater the likelihood of success. Teams like the 'Posties' know where they need to be and they know their roles. They follow them to the letter; EVERY day. # 4. Support the systems. It is essential that the entire team do their homework and know their assignments. Each member has a responsibility to execute their task to the best of their abilities. Supporting the system does not entail being lazy by taking shortcuts, or deliberately sabotaging the leader's efforts to make you successful. Support is continuous, not jumping off the wagon in the tough times and climbing on that same wagon in the good times. E.g. Toronto Maple Leafs hockey fans in the late 80's or any number of Tour de France cycling teams that have individual riders working for themselves putting personal awards ahead of team decisions. Generally the personal achievements become impossible without help. # 5. Follow up and re-evaluate. If the leadership is lacking change it immediately. If the vision is blurry, wipe off the grease board and create a new one. Too often teams are stuck in the past when they need to be in the present. You do not win today's games on yesterday's headlines. There it is. Five points which can be applied to any team situation (minus a large consultant's fee). Then why isn't every family, business, province, or country fielding a winning team you ask? That is an easy answer. A 'Winning team' means that they are successful at achieving their desired vision through implementation of their plans. A 'Winning team' means that they are successful at achieving their desired vision through implementation of their plans. The players often cause the problems because instead of executing the game plan they believe they are in the positions to create their own visions. They are not. The plan is in place and now needs to be strictly followed. Like an American 'Dream Team' basketball player the team is secondary to their very singular and selfish mentality. Players or team mates create problems because of these three main reasons. # 1. People do not know their role. How many players do not know what they are doing on the fields of marriage, business, politics, or life? Statistically many. Today's population is filled with part time wannabees wasting full time potential looking for the next best thing. Here's a tip. Match what you're passionate about with what you are good at and be a benefit to the 'team society'. Hollywood is full, so stop pretending you are more important than you really are. # 2. People do not accept their role. Not everyone can be the breadwinner, the visionary, the coach, the quarterback, the manager, or the president. Not everyone will be evaluated, compensated, or treated the same and nor should they. WE ARE NOT EQUALS. We need to educate ourselves on the diversities of our team members in order to understand them. The harder you work the more you will be rewarded on any team. When the egos are checked at the door and roles are accepted, championships are won. E.g. Chicago Bulls. # 3. People do not fulfill their roles to the best of their abilities everyday. Looking at the calendar there is a vacation for every second week of the year in North America. Fridays are off early and working a weekend is taboo. Teams have been analysed by the players to find the 'easiest way'. The imbalance of those who understand that hard work yields great rewards versus lazy corner cutting whiners is staggering. Yet at the end of the day, it is the whiners who wonder why their teams fold or why they are demoted. There is absolutely no reason not to be the best father, mother, restaurateur, trainer, sales person, mechanic, clerk, secretary, boss, leader, or aid you can be. After all, the team YOU joined needs you and you chose the position you are in and thusly the responsibility that comes with it. Nobody made you take that job, have that child, or join that team, YOU did. Look to step up instead of sitting down. Start figuring out that the better your team does the better you do. Although it may be interesting to watch a world series being played by a single player, a business flourish without the help of others, or children grow to be great contributors without guidance from their parents, it is largely unrealistic. Each of us has a responsibility to the teams we are on. Be they family, community, provincially, nationally, or globally, we all owe it to the team we are on. We all have roles to play on those teams. Those roles include appointing leaders, aspiring towards visions, and inspiring others around us. Reflect on the achievements that have been accomplished and the legacies that have been left. Most, if not all (and regardless of the star player), have been accomplished through the power of teamwork. Now, rally others towards your own vision and make a difference. Make the teams you are on better, stronger, and more successful so that you can be swept forward with that success. The Laws of Physics

Issue 44 - September 21st, 2004 It is an undisputable law of physics that a positive energy or charge and a negative energy or charge cannot be in exactly the same spot ever. They are polar opposites. Grade school physics also made us aware that energy could never be lost it merely transferred itself from one position to another and at times in a different form. Notice your breath on a crisp morning as you climb that final hill just before descending your favourite piece of single track. That breath or carbon dioxide is just a different form of energy leaving your body. As shocking as it may seem very few people pay attention to these laws of life. While the daily grind administers its own undisputable laws upon each and every one of us most people behave like their energy is being transferred away from them and not towards them. In an atomic particle the negative charge and the positive charge circle the nucleus like the planets circle our sun. They remain like two magnets attempting to be brought together. The forces of each charge keep the circles moving and more importantly those forces allow the positive force to remain on its own and the negative charge to do likewise. The two never meet and in the physics of your world they never will. Your thought particles in every section of your brain are exactly the same. The most devastating example of energy being transferred was the first use of an atom bomb. It showed us all in a very publicly consumable form how energy could change but that is definitely could not be lost. The power and energy from that explosion was massive yet it was merely a different combination of energies that already existed. It is world altering moments like this which have the ability to change energies in all of us for generations. Your actions are a reflection or explosion of your own energies. This past weekend the sea2summit was held throughout Squamish and Whistler. The setting was beautiful and the riding was epic. The starting line had a form of energy that filled the air. One could say it smelled a little like fear but probably was more like trepidation. While this publication lacks the time to be able to go into full detail of the event and its various stages I can tell you about the finish line. The energy was like a mini atomic bomb. Finishers reveled in their glory knowing that they had truly accomplished something monumental in their lives. Positive energy truly flowed with most if not all competitors thrilled that they had finished a two day stage race that averaged fifteen hours of outdoor adventure. The finish line was a culmination of all the emotions from each section of the event brought to a boil and like a huge breath being let out the resulting energy came from elation and relief. It was truly inspirational to be a member of this race. Are your negative thoughts in need of replacement with positive thoughts? Is the energy you are displaying a direct reflection of your overriding negative mindset? Grab your bicycle, your sense of adventure, and make yourself pedal somewhere that you haven't gone before. Just like an atom with a negative charge and a positive charge that can never come together a specific part of your brain cannot have a negative and positive thought contained at the same time. Why not take the negative thoughts and replace them with positive thought particles. Why not use those positive energies to accomplish something that can generate 'atomic bomb' implications for your life. If you don't believe this type of energy should exist then just drop by the finish of the next adventure race, triathlon, or marathon in your area. Finishers of all types and styles, regardless of their placement, positively radiate with a new found happiness and energy. When will you discover the combination to the energy that exists inside of you? Try replacing the negative with the positive because the two cannot be in the same spot at the same time. Until next week, Willie Henry

The Unsung Heros

Issue 43 - September 14th, 2004 John Henry volunteers, Denis Goulet, and Kelly Owens Well, it's been a great year for cycling enthusiasts in BC, we've had a very cooperative summer in terms of weather, we're seeing progress on the political front, and more importantly, more people are riding bikes. Here in British Columbia, we're seeing bike shops expanding, riding clubs growing, ski hills becoming mountain bike parks in the summer, as well as cycling lanes appearing on road ways. It is a very refreshing and encouraging time for cyclists here in BC, especially considering the struggles riders are facing in other parts of the world. This growth and excitement, is purely a direct result of heart, soul, and spirit poured into the sport by some of you reading this newsletter. It is those who have devoted hours of their own time, who truly believe in the sport's potential and good nature. We always hear about the friendly, supportive cyclists, who are always willing to stop and help out on the side of the trail. We hear about the volunteers, who spend countless hours organizing events, or an incredible amount of hours building, maintainiing, and sculpting trails for our pleasure. Seldom, do we ever stop to realize the opportunites that these people are creating for the people who are new to the sport, or are just out to give it a try. Well BC has become the mountain bike mecca that it is because of efforts that involved huge hearts, unbreakable spirits, and unforgiving determination from those within the sport. BC did not become this meccaa simply because of the countless mountains, lakes, rivers, and trails that have existed for hundreds of years. BC became what it is today because of people like you. People who believe in the sport, and the people who make up it's whole. The people who go out of their way to create that positive environment that is incredibly welcoming to newcomers. So the next time you see someone busting their back on the trail, organizing an event, or even picking up some garbage at the local dirt jumps, make sure you stop and give them the pat on the back they deserve. There are so many people behind the scenes making things happen that the list is far too long to list, but I bet we all know some. Share the love, and say thanks. After all, if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have the beautiful cycling community that we do. This is your time to say thanks for all the things that people have done for you. Return the favour, chip in, lend a hand at the next local race or event, volunteer at your local bike shop, show up for a local trail day, and let's see if we can give cycling the push that it needs to become the globally accepted activity that it should be! An evening with 'Super Dave' Norona - Oct 13th... All around good guy Dave Norona will be hosting a Multimedia presentation at Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver on Wednesday October 13th. The show will feature a storied collection of slides, tales, and wild adventures as one of the world's best adventure racers. View the poster here, and we'll see you there! This weeks 'Seatpost' has been brought to you by guest editor Darren Butler, I hope you enjoyed it! Until next week, Darren Butler

Fear...

Issue 42 - September 7th, 2004 "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," - Franklin D. Roosevelt Flip open the paper, switch on your favourite evening news station, or tune into your local radio wave and all you will hear are problems. People are killing, cars crashing, roads are jammed up, there are environmental concerns, drug concerns, obesity problems, anorexia issues, and the ever increasing drama of famous people personal disasters. The effect on humanity is definitely measured and the real issues of the world have become secondary because they don't sell. What happened to the community atmosphere that was sports teams, church groups, school activities, or local clubs? Instead of taking an active role in positive endeavors people are fixated with the 'what ifs' of mass media. People are consumed by themselves rather that transformed by helping others. What if I get hit by a car? What if that killer is behind my house? What if I get fat or too skinny? What if my child does those drugs? And so on... What if we stopped fearing what could happen and started taking control of what will happen? About seven years ago John Henry started a riding club with the sole intention of providing a routine outlet for people to discover fitness and fun. Like soccer practice or hockey games there would be a date and time that one could plan in advance and there would always be other like minded people ready to inspire the rider in each one of us. Today John Henry Pedals and Pints is finally reaching its tipping point. The goal was for the club to take on a mind of its own, to develop ideas and riders from further a field than just the store was capable of creating. The club was designed to make a difference by just being available. While the work is by no means even close to completed, stage one has reached a point where everyone involved has stopped at one point or another and just said 'Wow – look at what these riders are doing.' The riding club has really made a difference and is now taking on a life of its own. What makes this relate to the above fear in the world? It took a team to create, a philosophy to care about, and a group of people from owners, John Henry employees, directors, ride leaders, sponsors, and of course members, to each decide that they could make a positive difference in their own world. Instinctively or through instruction they all realized that the huge ideas and grandiose plans would only be possible if everyone contributed to the end goal of a better world. What a wonderful feeling when people begin taking control of their lives and begin blessing us all with their inspired beliefs and efforts. I would personally like to thank everyone (I'd love to name names but there are too many for this small newsletter) for their fine efforts this riding season and I would also like to thank them for continuing to support the John Henry mission of 'creating riders' the world over. This winter will be a huge off season as it sounds like the club has taken on a mind of its own. Leaders are stepping up to offer night rides, cruiser rides, urban days, training rides, and a whole host of different styles of riding and two wheeled fun. The ideas are taking flight and the four hundred minds that have become this fantastic community are definitely better than one person trying to think of what to do with themselves. Are you waiting to make a difference? Are you scared of the life that awaits you? Put the paper down, turn the TV off, and take your first step towards breaking your own fear. RIDE ON!

Fun is Hard Work...

Issue 40 - August 25, 2004 It takes a lot of hard work to have fun. We have reached that time of year where people are discouraged by lost summer opportunities. Children, despite their complaints, long for the structure and social atmosphere of school; parents, despite their fake shrills of 'I can't wait until they go back', actually think of all the time they should have taken away from work to spend with their children, and for the most part we all wish we had done just a little bit more with our time this summer. Why is it every time something amazing occurs it has generally stemmed from someone's hard work? Their never seem to be magic wands or fairy godmothers just plain old hard sweat equity Think of great food prepared with enthusiasm or theme parties where attention to detail has helped put everyone in the mood. Remember events where spectators and competitors are cared for adding up to increased spirit and fanfare. Even think about when people just want to relax. It's the people that accomplish the most relaxing mood that have struggled to tie up their loose ends so they can focus purely on themselves. Organizing fun seems like it may be two concepts at odds but that could never be farther from the truth. Actually, fundamentally, humans crave structure and love organizing. Why would it change when it came to the meager topic of fun? This is why it is so strange that the world is so lazy. Why do we procrastinate so much? "I should go for a ride." "Maybe tomorrow, this T.V. show on hyena mating calls seems to be really exciting..." Every one of you at varying times have felt the sensations of 'just doing it' only to sloth back into your old ways of procrastinating. That day you forced yourself out on the bike elicited the usual response of "I can't believe I didn't want to do this two hours ago. What was I thinking?" Adrenaline flowing, mind full of oxygen, and your heart all pumped up, this is when you need to plan your next necessary ride. But you don't and I'll tell you why. You haven't made any priorities and therefore you don't step up to the hard work. There is nothing for you to follow in your personal life, fitness life, or your business life and the workload just seems overwhelming. Where do you start and how? The T.V. clicker seems like a good place. Maybe a video game or a nice bottle of gin will help me get going.... During the war the term triage came to use on battlefields by army hospitals and you need to become aware of its meanings. In that time triage was a process for sorting injured people into groups based on their need for immediate medical treatment. Ever wonder why you go to emergency with a broken arm and sit around for seven hours. News flash; your not at risk of dying so you are de-prioritized. The process is working on you. Newer meanings have come to light and the dictionary aptly spells out triage stating that it is 'a system used to allocate a scarce commodity, such as food, only to those capable of deriving the greatest benefit from it.' Or another meaning is 'a process in which things are ranked in terms of importance or priority.' It says a scarce commodity is allocated. Like, perhaps, your time.... Hard work and prioritizing your time; how do the two relate? Get out your PDA, laptop organizer, raspberry, or old fashioned pen and paper, and start listing your goals. Now prioritize them. What do you want to do and when? Then break them into little bite sized jobs and times so that these goals can be accomplished. Piece by piece you will begin to see that hard work organizing yourself, triaging your life, and getting down to the manageable but still difficult work of every day life, will vastly reduce the amount of procrastinating you do. There really isn't any time to procrastinate because life is waiting for you. By piecing together small jobs the big goals get attained but by not knowing what you should be doing with yourself, ultimately, your mind decides that 'nothing' is the order or organization it wants to maintain. So, as the saying goes 'If you want something done give it to a busy person'; give it to a busy, organized, prioritizing monster of a person. You want to ride more, so organize your day and goals around making that happen. Prioritize the ride!

Ironman Canada Test Ride

Issue 39 - August 17th, 2004 Test ride the 2004 Ironman Canada bike course!!! Sat. Aug. 28th Innovative Fitness and John Henry The Bicycle Man are pleased to invite you to 'test-ride' the 2004 Ironman Canada cycling course. Would you like to join us? This is a 180km ride, so although we are not racing, we do recommend that you have above-average biking endurance if you intend to ride the entire course as we do. We will be stopping to refuel and recharge (and relax a LITTLE bit), but it will likely be hot and a fairly challenging ride. We will depart from the park by South Beach Drive on the northern tip of Skaha Lake at 8:00 am Saturday morning and we estimate finishing the ride six or seven hours later, between 2:00 and 3:00 pm that afternoon. After the ride we will head into the Ironman village for an optional tour of the site, or you may choose to head home or to some other activity. You are responsible for all your own supplies and preparations, including accommodations, cycling gear and supplies, hydration and transportation to and from Penticton. If you are interested in this opportunity to taste what its liketo do the Ironman, please contact Matt Young or Willie Cromack for further details. RIDE ON! P.S. There is still a lot of summer to be had so get out there and ride your bike. If you don't have a place to ride join up with 'Pedals and Pints' or 'Alien Adventures' riding clubs and get fired up. Check out our new trailer for shuttling, it is sick!!!!

Happy and 'The Comfort Zone'

Issue 38 - July 14th, 2004 The grunts I heard were far from the normal hard working cyclist. Uphill we carried ourselves only to see around the next bend the road carried on relentlessly. The sounds began to beat at my ears. My teammate was struggling. Deep breathing, heavy moans, and the unforgettable sound of pain came from behind me. Working hard was not what this man was doing, that had stopped many kilometers back. He was now officially way out of his comfort zone yet continuing. How was he doing this and why? Nearly six months ago four of us had made a commitment to one another that we would compete at the sea2summit in Panorama. We were to be a team and we would train together, discover each others strengths and weaknesses, learn from one another, and develop into a real team. Alex was our last addition to the team. Alex has completed several epic multi-day races and is the type of person that lights up a room with laughter. Singing, impersonations, play-by-play accounts as we trained, and general levity were expected whenever Alex was around. By the time our race neared he was simply known as 'Happy'. 'Happy, how ya doing?' 'What's shaking Happy?' 'How was work today Happy?' His girlfriend and probably his mother had even adopted his nickname. So it was, Happy was our fourth man. He was strong, experienced, team oriented, and definitely happy. Training was enjoyable and sometimes a little monotonous but because of the group there was always someone to pep up the spirit. Inevitably it was Happy that would bring our serious demeanors down to earth. How could we possibly be having a bad time if we were riding our bikes?

Thoughts on the Tour

Issue 37 - July 6th, 2004 Today there are one hundred and eighty-eight men going out for a three thousand kilometer ride with some of the toughest climbs in the world, across countries, cobblestones, towns and small villages. Every day a new challenge, every day a dream come true, everyday a dream crushed. It takes years of training, months of strategy, and hours and hours of planning. One hundred and eighty-eight of the fittest men on the planet and only one man can win it all. Imagine riding all that way as your "Leaders" support. They are the "domestics", the men who ride these mountains and surround their leader in the "Peloton" - who protect him from potential danger, who in man instances gain no recognition. These are the men who set the tempo. Everyday the coach gives the team their instructions, the job description for the day, details about the days' course, what the course looks like, the wind factor, who's leading, the type of road, being prepared for the unexpected. Are you getting the picture? Now, take your domestics, all of whom are exceptional riders in themselves and give them an exceptional and inspirational leader. What do you have? You have the makings of a winner. Lance Armstrong, a leader, a man with a story. A man who visited the doors of death with a cancer that spread from the testicles to the lung and the brain. The prognosis was terminal and he apparently did not have long to live. He looked death in the eye and decided to take him on. He battled back with a goal in mind - He wanted to win the Tour De France the most difficult bike race in the world! HE HAD A GOAL!!! He surrounded himself with people who had faith in him; he rallied his domestics to aid him. He had faith that he could do it and that strength gave his team a reason to push on. This man who was abandoned by most of his sponsors when at his lowest ebb, held on to his dream and the rest is history. He is a five time tour winner and going for a sixth, possibly the only man ever to accomplish that feat. Not bad for someone whose sponsors wrote him off, one would have to say. Great leaders are motivated by their goals and the do not give up their dreams. Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Theresa and others who have pursued their goals , all at great personal expense , have all said at one time or another "DO NOT ABANDON YOUR GOALS" they can be attained. Lance's goals have been, and are being attained, as this letter is being read. His motto created for the cancer society is "LIVE STRONG" not "ARM STRONG"

Execution

Issue 36 - June 23rd, 2004 It was as I ascended the last part of 'Bonk Hill'. This was the part of the race where I wasn't sure whether my legs could actually continue to churn. Huge numbers of cycling zombies surrounding me were gamely trying to stretch out their cramped and foiled legs. I could have been delusional and certainly at that point we could have all been considered crazy but it occurred to me that there is a very fine line between what people plan to do and how their plan is executed. My stereotyped scenario goes like this: Avid rider registers for 'the race, the trip, or the destination', said rider tells themselves they are going to train, they then ride irregularly and out of guilt because they haven't followed a schedule, and finally they then die a painful death at 'the race' they so badly wanted to do. The plan to do 'the race' was inspired and an admirable one. The line between the plan and the completion is the poor execution. Do you feel that you have a plan? Have you failed to attain your goal and don't know why? Could it be your execution? Many people feel that by having a goal that the hard work has been done. They feel that just having a goal IS the plan. Judging by my poor cramping friends the goal is only one third of the battle. In prior newsletters the topic of goals and plans has been discussed. Now we talk about the final and probably most important third of the equation. Execution. A goal and a plan are only as good as how you execute them. Leaders must put a goal in position, a plan for accomplishing that goal, but most importantly that leader must help their people understand how to follow that plan or execute daily on the purpose. You are your own leader and your goals can only be accomplished if you execute a well thought out plan. A good plan is easily and routinely executed. Is your plan more of a dream?

Notable Cyclists

Issue 35 - June 15th, 2004 Today I have decided to let the proud and the proven speak about your beloved bicycle. See what they have to say about cycling and then try and tell me that the bicycle doesn't have the power to change the world....if you can. "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike." - John F. Kennedy "As a kid I had a dream - I wanted to own my own bicycle. When I got he bike I must have been the happiest boy in Liverpool, maybe the world. I lived for that bike. Most kids left their bike in the backyard at night. Not me. I insisted on taking mine indoors and the first night I even kept it in my bed." - John Lennon "When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking." - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle "Chasing records doesn't keep me on my bike. Happiness does." - Lance Armstrong after his third Tour de France victory "Few articles ever used by man (or woman) have ever created so great a revolution in social conditions." - Fred C. Kelly "Let a man find himself, in distinction from others, on top of two wheels with a chain - at least in a poor country like Russia - and his vanity begins to swell out like his tires." - Leon Trotsky "Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live." - Mark Twain

Dare To Dream

Issue 34 - June 8th, 2004 A few years back my sister took a journey of self discovery, education, and mind expansion. Her journey saw her land in the bustling city of New Delhi, India. From there she shot off via what can only be described as a bus but bears very little resemblance to the coach lines visible in our country. In this case, pictures do tell a thousand tales and some of them are incredible. Chickens, cargo on the roof, and people hanging from the bumpers and windows are just a few of the significant details. Her journey lasted about six hours in this moving coffin but ultimately came to an end near her destination. She had come to study with a master Yogi for what would turn out to be about a year. Her tales were magnificently relayed to us via email, postcards, and then finally over coffee and cold ones when she arrived back in the land of plenty. Now when you are on the receiving end of yoga stories you tend to lower your expectations for car crashes and late night parties but none the less the stories were fascinating. However, what initially struck me more than culture differences were the incredible levels of discipline she was desired to follow. Like Tibetan Monks, Tai Chi followers, and first nation elders, each day with the rising of the sun the school would meet in the great hall and all meditate. Discussion was not allowed and movement was minimal if allowed at all. Sometimes morning meditations would last for hours before a morsel of food was consumed. Then and only then would instruction begin. Discipline was being taught from the second my green eared sister had arrived. Thinking and discovering your body and mind was the essence of this training. Training we are never taught in school and something sorely missing from our society.

Prescribing Exercise

Issue 33 - June 2nd, 2004 Canada has done it again. We have come fourth. How depressing, we're not on the podium again... Except for this time it is actually a race we want to lose. Yes, I said lose. In a June 1 st article taken from Canada 's national paper, The Globe and Mail , Canada was ranked as the fourth most OBESE country in the world. What on earth is going on? You live in the most beautiful country, with the most liberal laws, a cacophony of physical options, health food and education, and yet here we are coming in a close fourth place on the obesity charts. Well it is certainly time to change. Quick fixes be damned. This country needs wholesale changes and YOU are the avid recreationalists that can help to make our country conscious of the task at hand. It is time to leave a legacy of educated and health caring individuals behind when we are granted exit from this grand planet. A legacy that can only start with YOU. It may seem strange but with careful and consistent physical exercise, like using a bike three times a week, one can reduce the risk of heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, and a plethora of other life threatening ailments by infinite levels. On top of the great physical benefits are the mental strengths that can be added to our character. Discipline, courage, accomplishment, and focus are character traits that the physically empowered receive when they consistently make exercise a priority.

A Cause

Issue 32 - May 25th, 2004 "Blessed is he who has found his work." Thomas Carlyle (nineteenth century English essayist) "When you were born, the world rejoiced while you cried. Live your life in such a way that, when you die, the world cries while you rejoice." The world is begging for you to help out. Begging and begging and begging some more. Help me. I need more disciples and more people that understand the meaning of this world and this life. You see it is the lost causes that interrupt the true nature of finding, discovering, and living for the true causes of this world. The habitual, new world, phenomenon of material gain has clouded the vision of most of us and has rendered us useless. People no longer live to aid a higher cause because they feel that gaining and adding cars, trucks, houses, and fine clothing is their real purpose. Where and when did this divergence get created? Why? Today the modern person gets up early, misses lunch, works late, doesn't truly take care of their physical state let alone their mental state of affairs, and then wonders why there is love lost, lack of energy, a loss of drive or desire for getting up in the morning, and major illness plaguing their lives. When described like this it seems easy to discover the reasons for these problems yet most of you in this situation will read this, hear the point, and then carry on with what you were doing; being part of the problem and not part of your solution. Hearing and not understanding the point.

Purpose

Issue 31 - May 18th, 2004 This is the sequel to the last newsletter 'Create Riders'. How many people go through life just doing what they think they should? Following along without thinking about what exactly it is they are doing. School to job and then to family with kids and so on and so on. The epitomy of the 'rat race' that so many people just don't believe they are a part of. Why does this happen to so much of the population? Blue suits, grim outlooks, and then in a final frustrated demeanor, a life dedicated to blaming others for their own plight. Gas prices are brutal, the government should do this and that, my boss is out to get me, and any other cacophony of worthless and impossible situations brought on by none other than themselves. Look around you, these people not only exist, they are the majority. Why? Because they haven't got a purpose. Purpose is the most powerful motivator in the world. Bar none. Take the blue suits and look at them in the hobbies they have found they enjoy. Stamp collecting, train spotting, bird watching, or say... cycling. Their hollow eyes are lit up with fire and energy. Their souls are light and their worlds are fresh and vibrant. A purpose has over taken those moments in time. Get that hard to find English stamp, spot train number 234567, get a glimpse of a yellow bellied heron, or clean a section on your favourite trail. All things that the mind contends are worthy purposes. "Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart give yourself to it." Buddha

John Henry Days Vision: 'Create Riders'

Issue 30 - May 4th, 2004 "All it takes is one match to light a forest fire." - Anonymous "Many people have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose." - Helen Keller "I don't know what your destiny will be but one thing I do know: The only ones among you who will be happy are those who have sought and found how to serve." - French physician Albert Schweitzer "If a man hasn't discovered something that he would die for, he isn't fit to live." - Martin Luther King Jr., speech in Detroit, June 23, 1963 Thirty feet above the granite landing and insanely with the rubber side up our protagonist looks intently for the landing and the sweet spot to lay the wheels of his trusty steed. Rider after rider attempt death defying stunts and each and every time nothing more than a determined smile graces their perspiring face. They are free and they are honouring their spirit. To jump and ride is to live. Around these riders the faces of the next generation sit wide eyed, mouths gaping, at what seems only impossible. Parents, teens, and the general public stare with admiration and a longing for the skills and the grace that these riders carry. Rider after rider something new is discovered, seen, or tried. What is the purpose? Entertainment? Slick selling? Fun? In the last twenty years the world of cycling has changed and morphed into many diverse forms. Comfort bikes, downhill bikes, Freeride bikes, jumpers, road racers, bmx, triathlon, cross country, cruisers, hybrids, touring bikes, children's bikes of all types, and anything in between are all considered typical bikes. Has the concept of a bike changed or have we really just lost site of the actual goal?

Riders will compete in a jam style format (riders can flow on the course at will and are not limited to one or two individual runs) that will test their skills at big mountain stunts, air and jumps, progressive street or bmx lines, and overall style and flow. The street will feature big air jumps, launching gates, skinnies for riding along, box jumps, and a wall ride to top off the flavour. It will be quite the spectacle. This is an incredible opportunity to see first hand what many mountain cyclists do every day. Only you don't have to hike to see the action you just have to come down to John Henry to see for yourself what the new paradigms of riding are. Bring the family, bring your friends, and bring yourself to a fun filled day on the North Shore. Riders From All Over To Compete For the Crown and the Cash.

The View From Mars

Issue 28 - Apr 13th, 2004 They told us you were coming and we spent weeks rolling out the contingency plan to do whatever we could to evade detection from the self proclaimed "most intelligent species in the universe". A couple of weeks ago it happened. A capsule screamed into our stratosphere and landed in the state of freedom. Instinctively, the townspeople scrambled to intercept the 'rover' before it could expose any elements of our culture. It was almost humorous, as we would take turns holding a holograph of barren wasteland in front of the lens as this rover navigated its way in circles across our farmland. We easily foiled the probes into sensing nothing but oxygen depleted soils. Why did we do this? We have zero interest in interacting with your people. Your people knowingly destroy your own environments. We read in the paper that the oceans have become a polluted wasteland because your people continue to dump hazardous wastes into them. We saw that a large percent of the water sources have run dry or are useless. We have curiously watched as you deplete the soils of your lands of their natural minerals and nutrients in over farming, over growth and over production for wasteful consumption. You use food as a 'demonstration of creativity' instead of meeting your basic needs of fuel and maintaining homeostasis. We saw the hole in your stratosphere five years ago and navigated your cameras towards the problem and you still send toxins into the air at a death defying pace. According to our tests, the quality of your air will be reaching toxic levels in the year 2020, the ramifications of which will destroy the fragile few ecosystems that you have left. Your people have an obsession with killing themselves and each other.

Ownership and Accountability

Issue 27 - Apr 6th, 2004 Ownership: belonging to oneself Where does the responsibility lie? Everyday we hear from those that walk through the John Henry doors; opinions on design, colour, model, look, function, and what brand is the best. These choice topics serve as fodder for heated debate over a casual cup of organic coffee. While the topic might not be Italian politics, the visual is very close to the one you perceive when you think of two retired European men passionately discussing their opinions du jour. While the noise is boisterous and aggressive, hands are waving and faces are alight with expressions only experience can give. Points of view, mostly without any foundation, ping back and forth between personal barbs meant only to get a laugh. But how many people really care about their opinions? A normal day brings the regular assessments: "Something needs to be done for our trails - you guys should take a more active role." "The community needs to get organized." "My frame broke when I landed wrong - it's under warranty." Day after day, person after person, someone else is determined to be at fault and someone else is the person that should lead the political charge. The glorious 'somebody else' should re-design your bikes, build your trails differently, charge you less and provide you more, take responsibility for your actions because 'it' broke, and ultimately make sure that there is places to ride and your favourite community stays exactly the way it is because you like it that way. People: it is time to look in the mirror. You are now face to face with the only person that can make a difference. You are looking in the eyes of another person that should start taking responsibility for you and that person staring back is...

When You Are Old

Issue 26 - Mar 30th, 2004 When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. - William Butler Yeats Will you murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled or will look back through time and smile inwardly at a life lived to its fullest? Sunday morning was a beautiful morning if you were up to see it. The sun was rising above Stanley Park and the normally drenched streets were bone dry and inviting. Cars slept and the world stood very still. Except for a lone cyclist. Slowly the legs turned moving her forward. After all it was 6:30am and her ride didn't begin until 7:30am. Momentum would pick up but presently it was time to bask in the glory of just being alive as well as contend with just being out of bed... The challenge had been laid down and the group if they felt up to that challenge was asked to ride across town before the scheduled start time so as to increase their ride time and endurance. The journey across town would be about 30 extra minutes for most and it was presumed the strong cyclists would travel the increased distance. Most were meeting at 7am where upon they would jaunt over the bridge and through the park to then join the main group for further exercise and exhilarations.

The Power of Three

Issue 24 - Mar 16th, 2004 Three is a crowd. Three leaves on odd one out. Three is unbalanced. Three is CHAOS... Chaos in its most stereotypical form is a negative term. Uncontrollable, unfathomable, and unpredictable are thoughts that spring to mind when the word chaos is uttered. It is perhaps for these reasons that chaos is so attractive. The unfathomable attracts like no other. People will sit mesmerized for hours by the rhythmic movements and unpredictable flow of clouds in the sky or waves as they ritually crash into shore. Why? These precious units of nature are the true meaning of chaos. They are systems so big that they are incapable of being mapped by our tiny little brains. Chaos is defined loosely as incredibly large systems that affect the universe. Parts of chaotic systems are tangible but they fascinate our curious minds because the entire system is never quite capable of being figured out. Our brains are so small and slow that we struggle with just three tiny items thrown into one mix. Try concentrating on the lyrics of a song, the guitar riff, and the drum beat, all individually... You cannot do it. It is impossible. Our brains are only capable of deciphering two out of the three at one time. (Psychology backs me up so don't think I'm crazy just research it yourself.) Take this concept one step further and look at any popular movie, radio song, excellent meal, or best selling novel and you will invariably see a chaotic system revolving around three or more (if they are really good) concepts. Your favourite sushi establishment has mastered this chaotic system with their chef's special - rice, salmon, avocado, and raspberries, all rolled into one unit - unfathomable but darn tasty! Raspberries with salmon - only the genius of an artist could make it work, yet they cannot explain how they made it work.

Your 15 Seconds of Fame

Issue 23 - Mar 9th, 2004 Dust off the camcorders, mini dvd recorders, and the mountain bike because it's your time to shine. The Digger has stepped up to the table (at Tommy's Café - ordered a Digger burger and a succulent coffee - oops, tangent, sorry!) and is the title sponsor of the first John Henry Digger DVD Contest. What is that you ask? Here is the explanation; Send us your best 1 - 5 minutes of freeriding video footage and we will have the North Shore's infamous Digger pick a winner amongst you that will find themselves with at least a fifteen second feature in the next coming Digger DVD. Your chance to show the world you belong along side the elite riders of the world's growing mountain biking community and another chance for your cousin in Poland to see you riding. Hey, Digger's DVDs go that far. Along with your featured riding scene you'll walk away the proud owner of a brand spanking new Norco Torrent Freeride hardtail frame. Norco has sponsored the Digger's DVDs for a few years now and they are proud to sponsor a great contest that makes people ride their bike. After all that is what it is all about. If Seinfeld can have walk on parts so can the Digger - now get out there and start shooting some sick footage. Will You Just Sit Around and Watch or Will You Become Involved? Details of the contest: First prize is a minimum 15 second feature in the next Digger DVD and a sick new Norco Torrent frame (www.johnhenrybikes.com). Check that frame out. Who couldn't use that? Digger and Know Fear Productions have the last say on the winner and own the rights to anything used in the final DVD or pre-production versions of the DVD.

Create A Disturbance

Issue 22 - Mar 2nd, 2004 It gets to a point where we can anticipate someone's response with almost 100% accuracy. If we know them well enough, we learn the underlying 'hard drive' that programs their behavior though witnessing examples across a multitude of scenarios. Dynamic situations with static responses reinforce the fact that our 'attitude towards anything is our attitude towards everything'. We can spot the "drama kings and queens" who focus on the problems in lieu of the solutions, in order to mask their need for validation. We see right through the blatantly gregarious and wild who execute the facade daring and outlandish in order to mask an air of loneliness and repression and we recognize the shy and reserved who don't venture too far from home because the dangers of the world have been reinforced day in and day out. The list goes on. In reality, there are not very many different personalities that we could not type cast in with a high degree of accuracy. This combination of people, personalities and behaviors is what makes the world unique, yet as we are evolving, we are regressing towards socially conformed 'uniformity' that is not helping. What if it someone wanted to change that convention? What would it take to change their pattern of behavior? Where would they start? With a disturbance... It has been well documented that behaviors result from habit-forming responses to applied stimulus, which are learned early in life and are harder to break as we age. Even when new stimulus is introduced, we tend to draw from past experience and manage the input with the predictable responses that maintain our homeostasis (our preverbal sense of control if you will).

What's Happening

Issue 21 - Feb 26th, 2004 While striving to inspire you to ride takes effort and energy the editors at 'The Seat Post' sometimes forget that simply knowing what is going on and where it is going on is inspiration enough. Today is a jolt of information on places to ride, events to ride in, and miscellaneous riding plugs including contests and fun. Put some of these dates on your calendar so that you remember to get out and ride. The Dirty Duo Race is being held again this year. Most people don't know but there is a specific mountain bike division. Zero running and all adrenalin. It doesn't cost much and the event is totally geared towards an exhilarating North Shore challenge. You only reap the rewards by entering. Saturday, March 6th is the date so get out there and race. This is the perfect kick-off to the season. Run if you wish but definitely get entered in the mountain bike division. Come on you hard-core cyclists, it's time to get off the couch the runners are putting us to shame! Click www.dirtyduo.com for registration information, course descriptions, and more explanations. 'Pedals and Pints' Riding club is back and registration is in full swing. About twenty people braved the weather last Saturday - wait a second - last Saturday it was 15 degrees Celsius. Braved? I meant basked in the weather and had a superb time cleaning the trails of the Shore. Members are receiving sweet 'Weekly Score' gifts and deals like a $10 gift certificate to North Shore Athletics and a custom cnc'd eNVy bottle opener. Most have been entered to win a Brodie Bike and been given a maintenance voucher valued at $90 - all because members reap the rewards. And that's not including the wicked rides. If you're not into the racing join us on March 6th at 10am for an off-season sojourn on the trails of the North Shore. Note to members: Seymour's Pub has just signed on as our official watering hole and the magnificent Tommy's Cafe is back for another year. Our partners are outstanding and they are stoked to make your riding experiences phenomenal.

The Aliens Are Coming

Issue 20 - Feb 24th, 2004 From the fabled hills of the North Shore come their strange rumblings. Honing their skills on his original drops and strangely artistic ladder bridges they learn the keys to friendship, camaraderie, and the necessary survival of this crazy world. Theirs is a mission of adventure and discovery. Individually chosen to take part in the building of a new community on earth they bring exuberance, a sense of belonging, and unrivalled passion to the North Shore. Who are these strange beings? Most know him as simply 'Bear'. He is an unassuming fellow. Quiet, happy, well liked, and boiling with a passion for the mountains of the Shore his sharp mind and progressive designs have now furnished him as a Shore legend. 'Bear' is the originator of 'Boogie Man' - one of Seymour Mountain's most used and talked of mountain bike trails. He is also the connection to earth for The Aliens. He is their leader... he wants you to join him and this is your open invitation. Don't be scared they won't harm you. They come in peace and sometimes end in pieces. The intruders we speak of are the youth group Alien Adventures. They are a riding club put together by 'Bear' and they meet regularly to ride the trails of the North Shore. The club learns the valuable skills of mountain bike riding but more importantly these kids learn to work in a group, skills involved in building trails together, and what the great outdoors really has to offer. Like real life video games these Aliens descend some of today's most progressive trails learning and enjoying the camaraderie that goes hand in hand with an inclusive club atmosphere. Some are better riders than others but most just want to be around people like themselves. People that like to ride their bikes.
