Schedule Success

”If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
-anonymous

Part two of the New Year series

Your mind is racing and because you have goals to attain. How do you realize those goals and where do you start? What’s the plan, Stan?
Your motivation is only the first stage to what will inevitably be your successful resolutions or goals. Now it is time for the plan.

A plan can be quite difficult to squeeze from your post Christmas and frozen January mind but bare with me and hopefully you will have something down by the end of your day. Depending on the person you really are (and not that sexy, super organized, crime fighting, charity giving, and amazingly fit human that you think you are) there are many ways to come up with a plan of attack, and come up with a plan you must.

At some point in your life you have likely been involved in team sport. The greatest strength of team sport is also the weakness that makes a sport and hobby like cycling so difficult. The one attribute that, above all else, makes team sports so wildly successful is their consistent schedules.

Luxury for Pennies

The ongoing democratization of luxury (read: quality retail goods at ever decreasing prices) has spawned a consumer's market and bicycle fanatics everywhere are taking advantage of their more powerful dollar.

  1. Huh?

They have a built in plan and a limit on the needs for self motivation. Games on the weekend and practice on Wednesday nights at 7pm, be there or be square. Gee, thanks coach. Who is doing that organizing for your life? Who is taking care of when you ride, when you rest, and how you fit these things into your life?

You are!

You are in charge of the principles that ebb and flow and lead you towards success. These are some guidelines that may help you to follow through with your goals and find success in your life.

1. If you can’t motivate yourself to go and ride, or eat properly, or take personal time, then find someone or something that will make you. Find that Wednesday practice time and schedule it in. Trainers like the guys at Innovative Fitness, who are helping me finish the sea2summit and clubs like our ‘Pedals and Pints’ have schedules that make you follow through. Their organization and infrastructure is already in place so all you need do is fit yourself in. Presto. Don’t be ashamed of the person you are, be happy you understand yourself so well and go out and find someone that can help you.

2. Write down your plan and go over it for one minute every morning. Yes, every morning. You will start to look forward to that one minute because of the charge your mind and body receive thinking about the goals you are aiming to attain.

3. Every week re-evaluate that plan. We all have busy lives and find regular obstacles that will get in the way of our work-outs. Things change and these are resolutions not the death of a family member or the loss of a job. Your plan might say to do three workouts or ride to work all week but an injury has slowed you down. Oh well that’s life. Keep re-evaluating and continue to take your one minute each morning or you’ll lose sight of the goal in the down time. One day- boom! You’ll realize that the resolution has disappeared for lack of your ritual one-minute.

This is a simple idea. I’m not trying to write a self help book or get too hung up on resolutions. I just want you to ride as much as you say you want to. To manage that you need to stick to a plan.

Here’s an example of a simple plan for a weekly riding schedule:

Sunday

I plan to ride with a friend for a casual but fun ride. Duration two hours.

Monday

I plan to ride to work. 5km each way.

Tuesday

Day off

Wednesday

Ride with the ‘Pedals and Pints’ Down Hill club. Fun and strength workout.

Thursday

Cross Country ride with the All Mountain ‘Pedals and Pints’ Riding Club. 2 hours exercise.

Friday

Ride to work. 5km. I’ll feel better about the beers on Friday night.

Saturday

Optional friend ride or solo ride

Evaluate and continue to be consistent. Does that week look difficult? Two nights a week and two rides to work. It almost looks too easy. Where’s the hitch?

The hitch is removing all the wasted time. Remember time is precious and if you use it wisely you will be thrilled with all your successes. If you lead a busy life those weekend rides can be early and you can still have the rest of the day. (For all family people I will make sure I write a barrage of riding excuses in a future newsletter!)

Establish a motivation, build a plan or get some help making one, hold on to that plan with the tenacity of a rabid dog, and have fun.

Good luck and once again Happy New Year,

Willie Henry
