  • What Pedals and Pints is all about

Our Pedals and Pints riding club has gained an incredible amount of momentum and respect within the cycling community of Vancouver in the last few years. John Henry's riding club has gone from a few staff riders wanting to get in touch with the our customers and riders, to a full blown club with memberships getting close to 400 people signed up annually and growing.

Why is our Pedals and Pints so successful? John Henry's riding club is so successful because of the people that drive it, the people who support it, and the way it is delivered. We offer Women's only rides, Downhill rides, all-mountain rides, as well as Saturday rides, road rides, and night rides throughout the winter months! That's a lot of different rides to get involved in!

If you'd like to get involved with our Pedals and Pints riding club, simply click on the forms, to access all of the registration forms and waivers. Note: Registration is valid for calendar years only due to insurance reasons.

    April 2006

California Ford Half Ironman, March 18th, 2006

March brings with it cherry blossoms, chocolate bunnies in the stores, and the start of the racing season for triathletes. In New Zealand, violent winds two weeks ago forced the Ironman organizers to cancel the swim and slash the bike and run distances in half.

The following weekend, our local triathletes braved cool temperatures at the UBC triathlon. March 18th marked the race date for the Commonwealth Triathlon event in Melbourne as well as the California Ford Half Ironman in Oceanside (25 miles north of San Diego). Ready, set, go!

Why You Should Join the 'Pedals and Pints' Riding Club

Join us for a variety of rides every week of the year. Encourage others in your circle of friends to join. You won't believe how simple it is to schedule a weekly ride that is already prepared and waiting for you. There are all levels and all rides are insured. Your formally trained ride leaders are eagerly anticipating your arrival so grab your bike and let's rip.

What Types of Rides Are Offered

Choose your ride groups from the following; Note: we are currently in our 'off-season', which means our group rides will consist of mainly Saturday Rides and Night Rides over the course of the winter.

Saturday Rides - These rides happen once every few weekends, and are usually quite epic in nature. The rides are organized in a way to accomodate several levels of riders, and usually a couple of groups.
Some examples of Saturday rides include Alice Lake outside Squamish, or the Sunshine Coast around Gibson's. Most of the rides will last from 3-5 hours, so they usually require a reasonable fitness rate, and a well packed back pack full of food and water.
Night Rides - Another addition to our 'off-season' schedule, these night rides promise to bring lots of hootin' and hollerin'! Charge up the batteries, or go grab some lights, and come down to the shop for Tuesday night rides, every Tuesday, leaving John Henry's at 6pm. The rides will be on the North Shore, and you will need to bring your own lights. Check out the Night Ride schedule for more details.
'Ladies Only Club' - a ride for women only. Prepared rides lead you all over the province and take you to new levels of riding. Experience isn't necessary but smiles are. This section of the club accepts all levels of riders and will be also encompassing training nights, fixing clinics, and maybe even events like fashion shows. Not convinced this is your 'cup of tea' then corral some more 'Ladies Only' information about your leaders, riding levels, and schedules, then check out what others had to say about previous editions of 'Ladies Only.'
Downhill Revenge - freeriding shuttlers abound and the name of the game is gravity-fed charging. At least two groups leave the store, one intermediate and one expert. Male or female chargers are invited and you can expect to see the stormtroopers hittin' it. Bring yer truck Jed, this here is one honkin' ride. Trail riding, trail work, and parties are what we preach. Will you follow the gospel of downhill adrenalin? For an in-depth look at the Downhill Night
Open All Mountain - riders of singletrack and Shore trails 'earn their turns' on every one of these rides. Coed leaders and riders exert themselves to make the top of the trail so they can freeride to the bottom, satisfied that they earned their downhills. Technical uphills, fast singletrack, freeriding, grunting uphills, gentle and aggressive downhills, and wicked comeraderie; this ride has it all. You definitely find friendship on an uphill. Find out more about the Open All Mountain riding levels and groups and then ride till you deserve that pint.
Road Rides - Ready to hammer? Enjoy miles in the saddle as you cruise the streets of the Greater Vancouver area. What better place to ride and enjoy the scenery with a group of other road bike enthusiasts. The Pedals and Pints Road Club is there to get you started bright and early.

Answers To The Questions You Now Have

What time do the rides leave at?
Rides are scheduled monthly and you are made aware of all rides via email. The store posts copies of the schedule, the staff know where rides are, and you will be sent emails regularly. Generally rides that are week nights start at 6:00pm sharp. All other rides will be posted for you to check on the calendar of events, the chat room, your email inbox, and the Riding Club schedules pages. You can also call the store at any time and ask for help. The phone number is 604-98-5534.

    What does the insurance cover?
The cost of insurance for you and John Henry the Bicycle Man and the rest goes towards running the club. The club operates as a non-profit division of John Henry the Bicycle Man. The insurance covers $2,000,000.00 in disability and death. Scary stuff. By the way, you're not supposed to get hurt or die. This is not in the plan.

    Where can I join?
You can download the forms and/or sign up at the coffee shop. You will always have to sign a waiver form at the coffee shop and at the same time you can pick up your insured sticker.

Should I have my bicycle checked over before I go on a club ride?
It is always a great idea to make sure that your bike is in proper working order. Ride leaders will have some tools with them but it's nice to never have a mechanical. Experienced mechanics from the illustrious Tech Centre will be happy to take a look at your bike for you and don't forget to join us for the Free Drop-In Mechanic Clinics on Wednesday nights. These clinics will help you check your bike over before rides. However if you sign up for the Gold membership your mechanical worries should be addressed. To find out why click here.
